Microsoft Office

Published

Hi everyone,

This may seem like a bit of an odd topic to bring up on this forum, but I'm currently pre-nursing, taking prereqs required for a BSN program, one of which is a technology elective. This particular class requires Microsoft Office Professional, and I have Microsoft Office for Student/Home. I am desperately trying to avoid spending the $200 on this program, but if I really have to, I guess I have no choice.

So my question is: Do any of you have or use Microsoft Office Professional? Sadly, I may have to spend the extra $200 just because Microsoft doesn't sell Outlook alone for Macs and Office 2011 for Home and Student excludes that specific program.

Is Microsoft Office going to be of any use for me in nursing school?

Thanks in advance.

See avatar. I loathe all things MS, but do NOT get the new upgrade for Pages. You can write anything you want in Pages '09 and then save it as a .doc (hit duplicate, open duplicated file, save as Word document); Pages will open any .doc just fine.

You can save your Keynote as PowerPoint (don't get the Keynote upgrade either) and Keynote will open any PP just fine.

Open Office has a free version of Word, Excel, PowerPoint & Access. All save in the proper format (.doc, .docx, .xls, .ppt, etcetera ).

You are a lifesaver! Thank you so much to you and everyone else who mentioned this program.

To explain a bit more in detail, I have three classes that I can choose from for my technology elective for the BSN program I am transferring to. One of them is "the internet," one of them is "Microsoft Access," and the one I chose was "Intro to Computer Applications," which as it turns out is really just how to use Microsoft Office suite. I'm a little disappointed that my options are so limited, but hopefully thanks to all of you who mentioned OpenOffice, I may still be able to get this class out of the way this summer.

Fingers crossed that this will work for me.

Thanks again!

Does anyone think I'll be able to pull off my assignments with this class? It is supposed to be a basic rundown of how to use Access, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access. So I imagine that my assignments will be pretty basic. I know you guys can't tell me for sure, but have any of you ever used this program and everything worked out OK for you?

A class entitled "Intro to Computer Applications" that's going to cover word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and presentation software is going to be a *very*superficial introduction to each and I'd guess the database portion will be even more superficial than the others simply because it's a very deep subject.

I really wouldn't stress it.

Great! Thank you very much :)

All of those programs are pretty simple once you get the basics down. I worked in a corporate office for a long time and had to use all of them on a regular basis. If you struggle with anything, just Google it and you will find a ton of tutorials on how to do just about everything.

Re: MicroSoft Office Suite. I am a psychiatric nurse trying to return to the nursing field after getting over specilaized in Psychnursing forensics for 30 yrs,and a back injury of 1 yr ago, which prevents this type of nursing. Most if not all of the jobs I see on Craigs list and several others, Indeed, JobHunt etc require proficiencys in all programs of Microsoft Office Suite. By the way if anyone knows of a good area for me to pursue in nursing with these deficiencys, please contact me @ [email protected]. I joined this blog months ago to find training in Utilization Review and still have yet to find a training program for this. Thanks in Advance .
