I took the micro without the lab at OCC. I didn't need any prereq's like Bio or Chem to take that class. I did end up taking intro to Chem (after I had the micro class) only because OCC wouldn't accept my high school chemistry class. I hear the main reason they suggest taking the one with the lab is in case you want to get your BNS in the future. I also didn't want to attempt taking the lab micro because I was also taking AP2 that semester (which of course has a lab) and was working and it would have been extremely difficult.
I took micro without the lab because the one with the lab was all full and I was trying to make the deadline. I later regretted it because when I was trying to apply to other schools (just to keep my options open) most of them required micro with the lab. Fortunately I was accepted into OCCs program. If you plan on getting your BSN I would take it with the lab. Other than Oakland University I do not know how many colleges accepts it.
I took Micro of Health and Disease which is without the lab. Like previously stated by DandJsmom and Strawbchik, if you plan to get your BSN in the future, you would need a lab. I already had Chem and A & P but that didn't matter in this class. The instructor did not refer to any of that during class. Good Luck!!
I thought they were both tough in different ways. Intro to Chem was a ton of math and applying all the math steps.
Micro. doesn't involve math and it's just all memorizing. Do all the reading and you should be fine. I had an adjunct professor for this class and she wasn't that fantastic so it made the class harder than it should have been. Now I haven't taken the one with the lab so I can't speak about that, but it will be interesting because you will probably do cultures and watch things grow, etc.
Good luck to you..If you're going on for your BSN..the micro with the lab is the better choice. If you're doing A&P in the summer, you still have the fall term to take micro right?
Yeah. I decided I wanted to be a nursing major 1/2way through last fall semester, so I'm rushing to get all my prereqs done. I couldn't get any Micro or A&P this semester because of my 'priority registration'. So I'm trying my best to sign up for classes this summer. I log on the course selection website OCDly, and I finally got A&P 1 when I was in my english class :) Now I need to try to get A&P 2, and Intro to Biology.
My plan was to finish the rest of my prereqs in winter, so I'd take Micro, Comp 2, Nutrition and I may retake General Chem since I went into that class not knowing a thing, and although I'm getting a B, it ruins my GPA
Strawbchik - did you get accepted into the OCC nursing program for this fall?

Can any of you tell me if you took the Microbiology with or without the lab? (1570 or 2710 I believe) I read that the Micro 2710 requires the intro to Biology (haven't taken) and intro to chem (taken) as a prereq. I need to have Microbiology done by winter because I wanna get into the '09 OCC nursing program. I am doing A&P 1 + 2 both in the summer, so I have no time!!
My counselor said it would be better to have Micro with the lab, but how many of you have taken it without it? I don't know what I should do! If I should try to take intro to bio in the summer.. it might be very overwhelming!
