Hi: I am sooo scared I will not be able to do this Micro thing. I was so excited to take this class. I thought I was going to be learning about pathogens and how to stain etc. Then comes along the Chem!!! I am only on my third chapter and I am afraid I will fail this class. I wish I knew there was so much Chem. I would have taken a small class on it. Can I do this? I do get the whole levels of rings and why they need to gain and share and etc. My teacher put things like moles, and put all these OH-OH etc and I am lost. I do study and try to figure it out.
Although I did not think I would ever pass A&P either and I recieved a B+ in all. Is there anyone else out there that is not a chemisty wiz that passed Micro with a decent grade.
I have my first Quiz on Tuesday and I am afraid it will be all Alien to me.
Thanks so much.

Hey! I was out of schoool for years before I jumped back in to Chem with A & P I and developmental psych. Got all A's. Chem is NOT BAD!! You will get through the micro class- trust me.. I don't remember there being a lot of chem, so don't freak!! I loved it, so let me know if I can help you!! You will be just fine!!

There might be a little basic chem in it, but don't worry, the chemistry doesn't get much more complex further in the course...
You have a full weekend to study up. Here's your chance.

There isn't really that much Chemistry. I took Micro without having the Chemistry background and was a little freaked out, too. I ended up with an A in the class... just by studying and practicing a LOT.
Thanks to you all for the faith. I try and take it one chapter at a time and not freak out. It is nice to know that some of you stilll recieved great grades and was not a chem major.:yeah:
Dear conandcait: You said in your post you may be able to help me alittle in chem. I just have two questions I am stuck on. I have the answers in the back of the book, but I really want to know how to get there. Would you mind looking them over?
First Question:
Element Atomic x number = Total weight
weight of of that element
Atoms
C 12 x 6 = 72
H 1 x 12 = 12
O 16 x 6 = 96
The question is : what is the molecular weight of C6 H12 O6 = I know the answer from the book, it is 180 grams.
I know that the 6 in C and the 12 in H and the 6 in O is the number of atoms, but where does the atomic weight come from? Is it the number of electrons? Thanks for trying, I would be so thankful.

Hi seaspray- The example you gave earlier is C6H12O6. To find the molecular mass you take the # of each element- C 6*12.01 H 12*1.01 O 6* 16.00 The 12.01, 1.01 and 16.00 are the molecular masses in g/mol.Add them together!! The number of electrons is the same as the number of protons; atomic number is the number of protons plus electrons. Atomic weight is the protons plus neutrons. After writing this, I don't know if it is clear- does it make sense to you at all? Let me know! Kelli
I probably sound stupid to you but: the 12.01, 1.01 and the 16 are still stumping me. Is it because I do not know how to calculate moles?
I am sorry, If it is asking to much I can ask my teacher, but he is horrible getting back to me.:redpinkhe
Hey! You are NOT stupid! NOT asking is stupid!! Are you confused about where the numbers are coming from? Do you have a periodic chart? Under the elements on the chart are where the numbers are coming from! Does that answer your question? I can explain further, but do you need that? Our teacher offered that info on each test...A chart was provided! Kelli
Oh my goodness!! I never thought of that! I thank you so much and send hugs over the computer. I just thought because I am 50years old I should be looking at my stone tablets. LOL. I do not know why my teacher did not just make it that easy. As I always say "Oh my stars". Thank you so much...................
I do not know where you live but, if you ever come to Maine my e-mail is [email protected] and my husband is a Lobster Man and we always have ex-tra!
God Bless!
