Funding for nursing school

In my accelerated cohort there were 5 of the group of 39 who did the paperwork for Michigan works and got something like $3000 or more per accelerated semester (no strings attached). There were papers to sign and this varied by county. They were paid per hour in class and driving time and teachers had to sign papers daily but the money looked good. A lot of red tape and denials at first but somehow they got it.

I also heard the state offers $4000 per student

but lots of FAFSA papers to complete. It sounded like our school did nothing at all to advise or help. so details are sketchy.....

If you were in a job where you were laid off or almost redundant or business closing it sounded like the state will provide these funds to retrain...... even if you do have a college degree already

Can anyone assist me in learning more? Loans are nice but need to be paid back..

I am done with school but have some loose ends to clean up my accelerated nursing school website and this is a biggie.

I was all of these things, and Michigan Works!! did nothing for me. Nadda, zip. It confounds me how others get through. I have nothing but scorn for that organization. I want to swear now, but Siri will zap me, and I don't want to offend her.

I never tried for Michigan Works because I wasn't laid off - quit for the accelerated pgm. Also, I didn't happen to live in a county that they do it for. A couple of people got it. They paid their schooling and gas money. They told me only certain counties do it. Also, they said it was a lot of work to get the money and there was mounds of paperwork. However, if you live in a place that does it I say go for it. Like all government it is a big hassle but probably worth it to have the money.

Michigan also subsidizes a 2 year $10,000 interest free loan for school (it is interest free for 2 yrs and you start paying it back 2 yrs after you get the first check). It is through my credit union. They don't look at income or even if you are employed. I don't think they do much of a credit check either.

Sorry for late response. I was in finals week. The credit union is DFCU Financial Credit Union. But other credit unions probably offer it too. I think Michigan actually offers it to any credit union who wants to give it to their members. Check the timing though. You might have to be a member for a certain period of time to get it. Although at DFCU you only need $5 dollars to become a member. I love credit unions. Have been using them instead of banks for over 10 yrs. Less charges, etc. Anyway, even if you have to be a member for a certain time period, you could join now and get the loan after the time period is up. But if you are already in one, try to see if they would offer it to you. Look at the MI state site to find info for it.

Can someone give me some info on the Michigan Works grants? I have never heard of this. I looked on their site and couldn't find anything either. I would greatly appreciate it!
