Hey!
Has anyone else applied to this program?! Just got an email that my application was being processed!!
Got cha, that makes so much more sense. I got confused because I didn't see psych in the curriculum plan, but the course name is probably different.Another question if you don't mind. Do you know what the student-preceptor relationships are like? I've heard mixed reviews about the clinical placement process. Some thought that it was a little unorganized and that their preceptors didn't really know what was going on; some loved their placements and preceptors.
I've LOVED my preceptors that I've gotten for all my clinicals so far. They have all been really supportive, nice, and they know what it's like to be a student nurse. I had a new preceptor for my very first MedSurg clinical which was a little scary because it was new for us and new for the preceptor, but they were still great and really wanted us just to do well.
Sometimes the way that the clinical "work" is laid out is a bit confusing and it doesn't get communicated to the instructors in the most timely manner about assignments, etc. This happened with one of my clincals. But, even in that case, our instructor just emailed our professor and everything was sorted out okay. We were never penalized for something like that.
Most of the preceptors have been with the school for a while I've found. There can be some that are more strict about some of the clinical work that is done, but the people who have had those preceptors still really liked them and appreciated it because it makes them a better nurse
Hi everyone! My name is Nicole and I was accepted last week to the dual track (adult gerontology and women's health) DNP program. I am SO excited to move to Boston in the fall to start nursing school!!!
I live in Florida so I was wondering if anyone knows if it's necessary for me to go to the admitted students weekend. I will be going up to Boston later on to look for apartments and see the school. Also, when is it a good time to start looking for apartments if I am planning on moving in August?
I had so many questions but many of them have been answered already. Thanks!!!
Thanks so much to you and Romero1027 for answering our questions! This is all so helpful :)If there are things that you guys don't like about the program, what are they? Any flaw that you wish MGHIP would address?
Honestly, I truly love the program and am so happy with my decision. If I had to pick something, it would be the cost (obviously!). It is really expensive, especially the first year since you're taking so many units. I've tried not to think about it and just try to remember that it will pay off in the end!
I also wish I had taken some classes before entering the program, which I didn't really know I could do/didn't think about! If you have the opportunity to knock out pathophysiology before starting the school, I would recommend it cause it lightens your load slightly in the first semester, but the patho class at MGH was pretty great too and not bad at all, but if you wanna save money might be a good way to go (just make sure it can transfer!).
IHP is really open and receptive to program critique with their evaluations for classes, etc., so I feel like they are always changing things too from feedback they are getting from students! I think because of this, there is not much to dislike.

Wait, did you get admitted to the DEN program or DNP? They are 2 different things (Direct Entry-Nursing aka no RN yet, vs DNP is Doctor of Nurse Practitioner which means you're already have an RN)
I didn't go to admitted students weekend and it was fine. I'm from CA and there was no way I was flying out and paying for a flight to do that.
If you know you are for sure moving to Boston, start looking & doing research ASAP. I signed my lease at the beginning of April for a September move in date. I did everything remotely from CA and had never met my roommates or seen the place which I don't recommend, but I was really careful and it worked out great. I didn't realize that Boston moving was so crazy, but when I got here I learned quickly. Since Boston is such a college area, everyone starts looking for apartments early.
Ah sorry my bad. I meant DEN. Got thrown off by the forum title at the top. So yes direct entry masters program. I'm not an RN yet.
I saw the admitted students day is only for a couple hours so I guess I won't be missing all that much.
Thats great to know! I'll start looking fairly soon then :)
I'm really nervous about moving to Boston so any advice on finding an apartment is appreciated! My Partner, 2 year old, and I are moving from Burlington VT but are originally are from Cape Cod, MA. Trying to find an apartment and childcare in the MGHI area has been a bit overwhelming/looks incredibly expensive. Is craigslist the way to go, or is there a better site to search for apartments on?

Hi Tesiahmae! Moving is definitely stressful, but I believe you will find Boston welcoming and enjoyable, especially in the summer! I think Craigslist is the way to go if you want to avoid working directly with a realtor. Realtors can be great and help you avoid slogging through posts that are dead or scams (please watch out for those, they are very obvious but till get people); however, they have so so many fees. Without knowing your price range its hard to give perfect advice, but there are so many great areas to live in and you don't necessarily have to be in Charlestown or North End to feel close to the school. South End is a really great area for families, as is Cambridge and Somerville - I love all of the neighborhoods but they have their own flavor. I can pass on some realtor information, depending on the area you want, if you are interested. I would say 85% of people I know used CL to find their apartment..
But you are right - Boston is expensive, housing especially because of the whole first, last, deposit and in some cases, realtor's fee thing. Start looking now - if you want an easy experience, use a realtor (being mindful of if they charge a fee, SOME don't!). If you want to shop around, have the time, and don't mind a few dead ends here and there, CL will provide something. It's also worth considering neighboring areas such as Revere, Malden, Medford, or even North Shore (gorgeous and way cheaper); I know people in Salem who commute in but for an intensive program maybe its not the best idea. Will your partner be working in Boston? What is your desired proximity?
I know that was all rather basic, but its about how close you are willing to be, if you're willing to work with a realtor and what you can realistically afford up front.
Once you find housing, though, its pretty smooth sailing!
