The IHP looks for diversity of experience and background, mostly. The class of 2012 is relatively diverse. The majority of my classmates are women in their 20s. There are around 10 of us who are male. The ethnic/cultural background isn't terribly diverse but there are representatives of a few different cultures in the class. I think I remember reading on the website that the average age of DEN students is 27. The age range is pretty broad (again, skewed towards the 20s). Anything you can bring to the program which will add richness or diversity of the program will enhance your chances of getting in. Emphasize what you think will add to the program, that is what they are really looking for (they'll tell you that if you ask them). The essay really, really counts a lot.
