I was wondering if you could give an overview of the benefits that the hospitals offer.
It seems that when you choose one of the nursing schools, you may be locked into that hospital system for at least 2 years, so I'd like to also weigh that in as to what school to choose.
I'm basically interested in vacation time for new grads and also other days that you can have off. As a 2nd career jumper I currently have a little over 3 weeks vacation and 6 personal (sick) days and my MIL who is WI basically by herself now, is advancing in years, and we'd like to visit her at least 1x a year, so I'm wondering if that's feasible. See in my occupation if you transfer companies you have to wait at least 6mos if not a year to accrue one week, so there's not a lot of jumping around from agency to agency anymore...not that there are that many to choose from!
Also, if say I did pick Mercy for the school, after a year or so, is it feasible to possibly be hired by someplace like Passavant? I was thinking that maybe UPMC grads and nurses would have an advantage to being hired there, but maybe I'm being silly and not understanding the process. I'm still trying to figure it all out (hospital vs nursing home vs VA hospital) they all seem to have pros and cons (though what I'm reading about nursing homes is downright scary!). Thanks for any input.

I work for UPMC (for the health plan) and started with 3 weeks. You have to accrue it before you use it. I think it equals out to 6 hours per pay accrued
This is considered paid time off and is bunched together with sick and vacation time. UPMC health plan still has a pension plan after 1 year of service as well as the 401k. Not many places in this area still have a pension benefit (that is for all employees of UPMC)

I work for UPMC (the hospital system). You can purchase paid time off at the beginning of your employment when you choose your benefits package. Time off accrues for me at the rate of about 4.5 hours a pay period, up to 3 weeks. As soon as you have the time, you can use it but of course you wouldn't want to interrupt orientation.
Many of the nurses I work with were students who did their clinical rotations there.
