OK, so I went to the open house at Mercy this week. I'm still confused on how they do their acceptance. They said they will start to review in January, anyone over a 3.0. Then in late spring they will reivew 2.0 or higher. In Michigan, schools are filling up immediately because of the amount of students, and most are cutting off at 3.70 or higher. Wouldn't they already be filled with students with at least a 3.5 or better? They say they recieve 100's of applicants. Why do they even look at 2.0 or higher in the spring? I would think everything would be full? Why does this sound too good to be true? I have all the pre-reqs completed (my last one will be done in 6 weeks.) Do they look at age, religion, locality?

I plan on applying to the school next week as a matter of fact and I was kind of wondering the same thing. When I called last week and spoke w/an admissions rep she asked me what my gpa was and I told her 3.4, she told me congratulations and that my gpa was impressive. I dont know if she was gasing me up just so I could apply or what. Im from MI too and I dont want to waste time applying there because I know that I wont get in anywhere cause my gpa isnt a 3.9. But if I can get into Mercy w/my GPA then I will definitely be going there. Let me know if you find out anything about what GPA's they usually accept, etc. Im really curious too!
Yeah. I have to admit it just sounds too good to be true. I have the pre-reqs they require...(chem, bio, math). I'll be taking A&P in the winter, and also have all my eng. classes completed....
I'm keeping my fingers crossed...I don't want to tell too many people up here in MI, as one might take my place!! lol
LOL...dont worry, I dont plan on telling anyone in MI either. Maybe after i get accepted (hopefully) then I'll tell them. I was also looking at Christ College (I think its in Cincinnati, forgot) and I contacted the admissions rep there. I asked him what my chances of getting in were and he told me my chances were good because the average student who applies there has around a 3.1 or 3.2, so you may want to look at that school too but they only have ADN not BSN. I think I have a MUCH better chance of getting accepted in Ohio than i do in MI. Lets just stick with OH
I can handle driving to Toledo, as I have friends there if the weather got bad I could always crash. I don't know if I could handle driving 4 hours to Cincinnati though. That would take some doing, and I would probably have to get a room down there. I'm completely prepared to drive one or two hours 3 days a week, but that would really be tough! I give you credit!
Yea I think Im going to just move there after I find out if I was accepted or not. It will be much easier on me. I need a change of scenery anyway, MI is starting to depress me;)

I think I actually might have replied to one of you in another forum, but I applied late (May) w/ a 3.3 or 3.4 something and was on the wait list for the evening program but was told if I wouldn't have applied late I wouldn't have had to be on the wait list (I ended up moving off of the wait list at the 11th hour to get a spot for this semester).
As far as I could understand they only based acceptance off of GPA. If you haven't already sat down w/ someone at the college wrt to your transcripts though, do that soon. I found that some classes other colleges (BG, UT, Owens) would accept for transfer, Mercy did not especially for the Chem & Math pre-reqs.
Also, if you're planning on taking A&P I at another college, you'll have to take A&P II there as well for any of the credit to transfer. Reason being that some schools teach certain things in I and certain things in II that may differ from what Mercy teaches in I & II.
I think that even though Mercy gets 100's of apps, the GPA's might not be the cream of the crop because most students in the area choose to attend BG/UT because they either want more of a big school feel w/ the amenities of a bigger school (i.e. dorms, more available class sections, Spring & Fall start, bigger selection of courses for humanties/general ed etc) or they don't want to take the required religion courses.
I know the ADN program is 4x the cost of the ADN program at Owens so (up until the whole accredidation fiasco) Mercy wasn't getting a ton of applicants to drive up the GPA pool. Mainly it was from those not wanting to brave the Owens wait list and willing to take on the extra SL debt.
Peytonsmom,
I have a question for you. To apply for Mercy is the application and the fee the only thing that you have to send in (besides the schools sending the transcripts of course)? I kept calling today cause my app is finished and I want to get it in but apparently no one was in the office. I just dont want to send in an incomplete app. There arent any letters of rec or essays required, right? Please correct me if Im wrong. Thanks!
Yup that's all you need, at least as of May when I applied.

Mercy has a high reputation in the medical field. I've come across many nurses from Mercy of Toledo. My first job 15 years ago was in WV and the director of nursing informed me that she too was a Mercy grad. When I went there, they were tough but they had a 98% board passage. Better by far from the other area schools. I don't recall any religion classes. We had a class on ethics and it was skewed toward the pro-life side but I don't recall any other.
Lcube - I've heard that not only from people at the school, but nurses on the floors of the hospitals we are doing our clinicals at. The ADN program only requires an ethics class that is taught "from the Catholic perspective" but the BSN program requires two religion classes; intro to Religion and an upper level religion elective.
I just mailed in my application, hopefully I'll be hearing good news. I applied for the BSN track just to get it out the way since I want my MSN anyway. Im set to take medical ethics next semester, so it sucks that I'll have to take it again if I get in. Maybe I'll find out something from them soon though so that I can rearrange my schedule for next semester. But then again if I take the class twice then I'll know what to expect the 2nd time around and it'll be easier. Does anyone know when they review the apps? On the site it said that they look at qualified applicants in January but was just wondering if there was a possibility that they would look at them as they come in and just make the decisions.
