Mental health hospitalization

Published

Any nurses ever been hospitalized due to fleeting suicide ideation? I’m terrified.

I was in a severely Abusive relationship for a couple years. I called 911 on my ex because He was going to kill me if I did not do something. He was taken to jail. Right away, I entered therapy. I’ve been going consistently since (Almost 2 years). I had a breakdown last month because he started harassing me and stalking me again. I called my therapist and spoke with her awhile, I told her it would be easier if I didn’t exist. She was concerned because she never heard me breakdown. She wanted the police to do a welfare check on me, however I wasn’t at my home at the time. They petitioned a 302 warrant. I cooperated. The police allowed me to drive back home and them go in the hospital. If they really thought I was that big of a threat, why did they let me drive? Never attempted, never had a plan. I was able to sign a 201 afterwards.
This was an isolated incident. I’ve received legal counsel, now it’s a waiting game. Has anyone else been through this? My job has never been affected in anyway. Great job performance reviews and character references. No patient complaints, no medical errors. I’m in grad school with a 3.8 gpa. I’m terrified.

Been there, done that (my hospitalization for suicidal ideation). I wasn't working at the time so there were no decisions to make regarding telling my employer, but I highly recommend keeping this incident to yourself. It's none of your company's (or school's) business, and they don't have access to your medical records anyway so why let that cat out of the bag?

The reason I advocate for non-disclosure is that I've been burned twice, in two separate jobs, essentially for being bipolar. I made the mistake of telling my bosses I lived with the condition, and suddenly I was under intense scrutiny; everything I did was gone over and picked apart as if to see if they could make me quit. Finally I was let go when I refused to resign, then went on to a similar situation where I lasted four months. That's how I learned not to disclose my mental illness to anyone at work; unfortunately it was too late to save my career, and I've been out of work and on disability ever since.

Try not to worry; as long as you keep quiet about your MI, you're good. If you are having trouble getting stabilized, please see your mental health professional. I'm so sorry your ex is still stalking you; do you have a restraining order against him? If not, ask for one. You don't deserve this kind of stress.

Wishing you all the best. Take care. Viva

I will have to disclose this during my renewal though. My board asks about hospitalizations.

I was hospitalized for suicidal attempt a few years ago. I had to tell my employer because I broke down at work in HR and told them what I was feeling and what happened. I ended up attempting the next day and ended up in the hospital the following day when I told my psychiatrist. I have not had any further thoughts because my three kids need me. My work was very supportive. I had to leave that job when I was diagnosed with aggressive cancer and years later, I still cannot practice nursing.
