Memorial Healthcare System Scholarship (Broward College)

Hi all, I am currently a Junior in high school and have a lot of questions! I have wanted to be a Nurse for many years and am now trying to find the best ways to get a degree in it. I have heard that it can be difficult to find jobs once you get out of school so I looked into this scholarship (http://www.broward.edu/hospitalsponsorships/hospitals/memorial/page14164.html) at Broward College through Memorial Hospital. Have any of you ever won this before? If you have, how difficult was it to get? Was BC a good nursing program? And where did you do your clinicals?

Also, if any of you have gotten any scholarships like these (tuition paid, work contract), I would love to get your advice!

Thanks much :)

Hi I would say to definitely go with the scholarship if you would like to secure a spot after graduation. And since you're just a junior in high school maybe by the time you're finished there will be a lot more jobs available out there. I attended Broward college and their program is excellent. A little intense, but you definitely learn what is needed to get started out there. I also was a scholarship recipient although I never did end up working for them, but the process is painfree. You basically apply and go through a panel interview with different managers from different floors, and after a few weeks you hear results of wether or not you were granted the scholarship. They do pay for your classes, but it starts the second semester that you are in the program. I will say go for it and good luck. We definitely need more good nurses.;)

Thank you so much for your response! I am strongly considering either BC or FIU for Nursing school so any information is very appreciated. Right now I am going into my senior year and hopefully by the time I graduate I will have all of my prerequisites done, so then I can enter right into nursing school (hopefully!).

When you went through BC's program, was there time enough to have a job? And one more question, how long did the program take you?

Thank you so much! :)

iwillnotwasteit,

i was already an lpn prior to starting the program, so it took me 18months to complete the program. i do believe it takes approximately 2 years for the generic program. also being that i had a family and a mortgage to pay for, i had no choice but to work full time. i did however do most of my hours on the weekend so i had the whole week to attend school and study. it all depends on the individual, because i had a few classmates who were not working and were struggling to pass their classes, and i had a full time job and didn't think it was that bad. so just see how it works and if you see that working is too much for you then don't and just focus on school.
