Memorable/Unique Housing

Hey fellow travelers!

I'm trying to think of fun ways to live while I'm on assignment. What are memorable housing experiences you've had? How did you find them? What made them fun? What was challenging?

I also thought this would be a fun, different change of topic from the usual contract questions!

I spent an assignment in Springfield MA, home of beloved children's author Dr Suess. My house was just off Mulberry St and a grand old house that would have been there when he was a child. Outside there small trees with rounded bushes of leaves on the branches that I'd bet strongly influenced his drawings.

Also of note in this seven bath home (3 stories and fun to explore - I had the place to myself) was an original working period toilet with "John" embossed in the enamel in the bowl up in the attic.

I've been in a number of fun places to stay, nursing accommodations in Blackpool England for an assignment, on the beach in South Beach Miami Beach, two different houses on lakes in MA and CA, both with canoes. Also a house in Portland ME with a kayak I used to explore the bay islands.

Ned, how on earth did you find a seven bathroom house for yourself!?!

Portland is definitely on my bucket list. I love to kayak!

I've had several memorable houses over the years. One of my favorites was in a small town in New Mexico - an adobe house over 100 yrs. old but completely rehabbed. It had all new kitchen and bath fixtures but the rest was original. The floors were the old brick laid right into the dirt, the walls were 4 feet thick and the ceiling beams and lintels were hand cut logs. It was right on the plaza of the little town but I never heard a noise.

Memorable for another reason - a 1970's double wide trailer on 5 acres outside of another small town. This one was notable especially for the décor - I believe "eclectic" is the best term for it. The living room was furnished with a bright blue gunrack, a ficus tree, a 6 foot tall wooden giraffe, and over the couch, a velvet painting of "The End Of The Trail". The rest of the house was furnished in a similar manner. All I could think on first sight was "Ohmigawd, old hippies". In addition it came furnished with a resident cat. The landlord supplied the food each week for me to feed him.

There are more I'll save for another post.

Great topic!

Baglady, both of those sound awesome!

I haven't had super unique housing yet, but my favorite was my adobe house in the Mojave Desert. There was a "terrible" snowstorm during the last week of my contract. I'll never forget pulling into the driveway and seeing icicles on the roof and snow covering the tumbleweed. Meanwhile, at home in WI, it was 60 degrees...

I lived in an abandoned floor of a college dorm with upscale (for a college student) accommodations. It was nice having bugles in the vending machines by the elevator, too noisy downstairs. Found that one through a realty agent. On VRBO.com I found a high rise 1 bedroom 1 bath on the 21st floor of downtown Atlanta with a concierge, etc. On Airbnb.com I found a beachside condo in Corpus Christi, Texas which included a double seater kayak for the ocean and a pool.
