OP, I was in the exact same situation you are in. The only difference is that when I went to my doc thinking I had ADHD I was prescribed Ritalin, that got me through another year in the NICU. I am now working in psych and am one year into graduate ...
  2. I agree with you about the theory classes.....gag me! I am just doing what I have to do to get through and learning what I need to on my own mostly. I considered changing programs but was not willing to give up a year or so of time during the switc...
  3. This can't be right...

It might help if you look up what normal respiratory and heart rates are for a five year old child as you seemed focused on these "abnormal" findings. You will find that they differ greatly from the population you usually care for.
  4. "Atypical" Nurse? How discouraging...

Run...fast there are more rewarding careers out there!! Nurses can be so mean!
  5. I have been an RN for only a year it is my second career, and I would not have gone into nursing if I had it to do over. The nurses that have been in bedside nursing for 20 to 30 years do "eat" new nurses, or at least chew them up and spit them out...
  6. Should I go to the Dean?

I think you should go talk to the dean. In the program I was in they did not grade anyone's presentation until everyone had presented, and you got docked points for going over. Being succinct is important, I have learned that through writing papers...
  7. Thinking About Surgical Technologist

First I would say if you want to be a nurse you should go for it. I am a single mom of three and have made it! Of course your husband would have to be supportive! If you are thinking of going to school for something else you should ask a local hosp...

  9. New to clinicals? Here's help.

YIKES Lactulose for diarrhea???? Someone is confused! Yes you are right, every RN student should know that Lactulose is used not only for constipation, but also to LOWER ammonia levels in liver failure pt's with high lab values of ammonia. The amm...
  10. Energy Level Of "older" Student

:yeahthat: I feel so much better when doing these things, also get a massage every once in a while!! I was lucky a classmate of mine was a massage therapist (she was 56)!
  11. How hard a BSN will be in my case?

I am not in your situation, but I think you can do anything you set your mind to. I have a friend who moved here from another country and started college and finished a few years ago with a masters and is now a speech therapist (very competitive pro...
  12. When do you start to study for NCLEX?

I am graduating at the same time you are and I started studying over the summer. I agree it never hurts to learn more, and be better prepared. I am working as a GN before I take the NCLEX only because I have already been offered and accepted a job...
  13. Q about dosage tests & calculators

Some teachers let us use calculators and others made the calculations easy enough to do in your head or on paper. I rely on the calculator when actually calculating a dose for a pt, most nurses I work have worked with do!
  14. Is this appropriate?

Bath/shower time is the best time to get a complete assessment, but I agree if the pt seems uncomfortable he should be allowed to cover up a little. Most pt's I have cared for do not mind, it is about their health and sometimes clothes, sheets, etc....
  15. Grades don't matter!
