Medsurg is a specialty... I'll be honest when I was in school and said I WANT medsurg it seemed like most thought I was crazy or under achieving ... But I recognize there are skills required to being a good medsurg nurse and it is a specialty. while it might not get all the hype and glamour of ER or ICU nurse it's very much a respectable and highly skilled nursing specialty. I'm glad to see that the attitude of "do it til u figure out what u want or u just have to the first year" is going away and more nurses are embracing medsurg with pride. U can even get certified as CMSRN. Medsurg requires me everyday to critically think and pull from all my areas of learning ... Heck the other day We had an "OB" pt ... Comorbidities such as DM heart disease HTN cancer COPD renal disease as well as psych disorders can be found on any given day learning to manage and collaborate care for these pts makes a medsurg nurses job challenging. And it's one of the many reasons I love it. Medsurg nurses rock !

Agreed, good m/s nurses rock. I hustled the floor for 11 months before going to the ED; I have nothing but respect for those folks that do it well. It surely isn't my cup of tea....

I always thought that ICU or ER is where is want to go but I really LOVE med-surg. The pts are stable (for the most part) and we get all types and diagnoses. I'm going to seek certification when I reach my 2 year mark.
