A lot of medical terms can be broken down easily. If you know the root words, suffixes, prefixes, and the basic combining rules, putting many words together becomes pretty easy. For example:
hysterosalpingo-oophorectomy
hyster/o=uterus
salping/o=fallopian tube
oophor/o=ovary
-ectomy= surgical removal
put it all together and you get the removal of the uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries.
For other words and abbreviations, I make flashcards on Quizlet.com. As well, you can print out a study table (e.g. definition in one column and blanks next to the definitions) and put it in a plastic sheet protecter so it becomes a dry erase board and quiz yourself by writing in the terms with a dry erase marker (this way, you don't have to waste paper all the time).
