I am a LVN student getting ready to graduate. What can I expect on a Med Surg floor?

Just wondering what it is REALLY like to work as a brand new nurse on a med surg floor? I graduate in 15 days :yeah: and I will be working on med surg. I have no idea what to expect really. We worked an entire semester on med surg, but most of the time it wasn't extremely busy. How hard is it to get used to talking to the Dr.'s? And to read their writing?? What would say is the hardest transition to make from a student to a real nurse?? Just worrying already lol and havent even started yet! Just want to be the best nurse I can be without having a nervous breakdown in the beginning!

your fears are normal - every nurse has them. I hope your first job provides you with a good preceptor who will work on conquering those fears. Some advice is that you do what is reasonable. If you cannot read the order, ask the unit clerk or another nurse. If that fails, call the MD. Do not guess. It will take many months for you to feel comfortable. Be sure to ask questions and own up to it if you do not know something. I was SO relieved to hear two long-time nurses consulting each other about a patient issue. It showed me that I will never know it all and that I should get help when needed.

thank you so much classicdame! I just know even as a student trying to read the DRS orders is terrible! And even a lot of the DRS accents are hard to understand. I really think that will be my biggest challenge lol! Well that and inserting a foley since I only got to do it in the lab :o(
