Medical Assisting to RN student

Nursing Students LPN-RN

Does anyone know the admission requirements for a Medical Assistant to be admitted to William Careys Nursing program? Are they they same as a regular student? Wondering if I have to take the TEAS V, if I am already a medical assistant.

I don't know the specifics about that school, you would have to contact them for specifics. But generally speaking from what I have seen medical assistants aren't exempted from any requirements.

The TEAS test is an enterance exam that test your level of proficiency in reading, writing, math, and science; being a medical assistant would not prove your level in all of these areas though your previous education would touch in all of these areas, being an MA doesn't prove that you can do algebra or scientific writing at the level required for nursing, for instance.

My counsin did medical assisting originally then realized that she wanted to do nursing, which is much different. She went back for her LPN then did all the same general education that all nursing students are required to do and is hoping to get into a lpn-rn bridge program. Be sure to contact the schools in your area for details.

Good Luck.

In my personal experience, the admissions people for nursing programs do not care that an applicant has experience as a medical assistant. You still need to complete the same prerequisite classes and pass the same entrance exams as everyone else who hopes to get admitted. Medical assisting is part of the medical model, and nursing is part of the nursing model. While a few medical assisting skills might overlap with a few nursing skills, the two career fields are not alike.

I earned a certificate in medical assisting back in 2000. I did not receive any special consideration when getting admitted into an LPN/LVN program in 2004, or when getting accepted into an RN program in 2009.
