Medical Assistant or Patient Care Tech?

Nursing Students Pre-Nursing

Published

Im pretty much reevaluating my life right now and not sure what job can help me gain a better learning experience. Especially since I want to become an RN, and im currently a full time college student. I'm hoping you all can help me. As of right now, I'm currently working as a CNA at assisted living for about a year now. My first job as a CNA was horrible!! I didn't learning anything from my nurses other than providing care to my residents. Then I transferred to another job that is also an assisted living. I don't mind it at all, I'm learning a lot from there. However, I just feel like im only learning different ways how to transfer a patient, and how to empty an ostomy bag. I want to gain a lot of learning experience as well!!! I'm not sure if I should work as a Medical Assistant or Patient Care Tech? My overall goal is to become a midwife, and I'm only 19 years old so I got along ways to go. Can someone pls give me advice on what I should do. I also feel like some of the nurses and coworkers talk to me how they want because of my age. Is it always going to be like this as a CNA, medical assistant, and Patient care tech?

Becoming a PCT or MA isn't going to change anything really.

LPN's are provided with CNA training and certification during the first part of their nursing program, and since you're already there, just stick with what you already have.

I think if your desire is to expand your horizons and learning beyond your current role, forget about becoming a PCT, MA or whatever and just get yourself enrolled in a nursing program as a nursing student.

im currently working on that, I have a 3.67 gpa and I just one more semester left to enroll in the nursing program. I'm just tired of working as a CNA

As an LPN I would say I have gained a ton of experience that will definitely help me in my future as I continue on to RN school. I can say I don’t regret going at all because I will also be able to make decent money while going to RN school full time.

That being said, I would still maybe advise you to go right RN school if you have the ability to and work as a PCT in a hospital - you’ll see and absorb a lot there more so than a long term care facility. You will come across RNs in a hospital that will never stop to explain or show you anything - but you will also come across ones who will remember being a nursing student and show you some cool extra things ?

Thanks girl! I'm gonna do that!! I appreciate your advice
