Med Surg in Vegas?

Hello all,

I have heard that working Med/Surg in Vegas is like gambling with your license because the ratios are so bad. I hear a lot of nurses are unhappy. I am moving to Vegas very soon (already recieved my temp Nevada license). I have one year Med Surg experience. Is this the time to switch to another specialty? Should I try per diem? Travel? Do any or many of the hospitals require that you sign contracts to work for a minimum set time? I am very nervous as you can imagine.

This is the first big move I will have ever made. I have to leave everything behind. My boyfriend lives in Vegas so I am moving to be with him. Any opinions/advice is welcomed and appreciated , good, bad or indifferent! Thanks in advance everyone! :0) :typing:D

I too would like to hear from an RN in Vegas who has more than 6 patients and what hospital that would be because I keep hearing about this gigantic pt-nurse ratio and have yet to see it or meet an RN that is dealing with it. I'm not an RN yet but will be done school soon and would like to steer clear from the facilities that have those kind of extraordinarily large patient-nurse ratio's.

Hi-you sound just like me-I have my permanent NV license and will be moving in June to Vegas-I can't decide between travel or permanent either-Med/Surg/ER are my places to work. I have a permanent offer at Summerlin Hospital but don't know too much about them? Since your post have you had any luck with offers? I would like to hear from you and any news you may have about the Vegas nursing too. Thanks

Hi,

I'm a student in LV and so far I've been at Siena, Sunrise, and North Vista. The max I've seen is 6 days and 9 nights at Sunrise. Sunrise has more severe pts on the med surg too (vents) sometimes. Siena is pretty cushy, not really severe pts. Usually the ratio on med surg there is 4 (every so often 5) days and I don't know about nights. North Vista is 5 days and I'm not sure about nights. North Vista is kind of a ghetto hospital in North Las Vegas but everyone there is sooooo nice and helpful. They are really kind to students and newbies. At Siena they tolerate you (its also the nicest and newest of the three). Sunrise is friendlier than Siena and in my mind gets the most interesting pts on med surg (alot of stroke and more severe pts). Starting med surg at Sunrise is 24-26 days, more for nights and weekends. I'm not sure about North Vista. And Siena I think is close to Sunrise pay. There's no contract for med surg that I know of in any of them. I think they only make you sign for ICU, ER, and other specialties. Hope this helps.
