What are your feelings about new grad students getting 1 year of med-surg experience before venturing out into a specialized area?

Most students get exposure to med-surg. If they don't like it and they know they want a speciality, I don't advocate going to med-surg just for the sake of the experience of being well-rounded.
I say go for what you're interested in. If you're undecided, or don't mind med-surg, then it's not a bad way to go.

To me Med/Surg is as much as specialty as other areas. I am more in favor of new grads being given an orientation that is appropriate in length and content to their unit. In the end, no knowledge is wasted, but a year in one area does not really prepare you for another area IMHO
