Med-surg nurse looking to switch into Maternity & child Nursing and struggling immensely.. any advice?

Nurses Career Support

Published

So I am about to touch the 3 year mark of being a med-surg nurse and I've honestly have had enough of it. I'm miserable every time I go to work because I no longer want to work med-surg & also because of the unsafe ratios/understaffing. I never wanted to do med-surg nursing but as a new grad I was unable to obtain a job in the fields that I wanted to work in which are NICU, Labor and Delivery or Post-partum. The nurse recruiter in my hospital at the time told me due to my status as new graduate, it would be very difficult for me to get a job in these areas - work med-surg for 2-3 years then apply to those areas and you'll get in. I have been applying since 2020 to no avail. I've applied within my hospital to L&D - spoke to nurse recruiter & nurse manager of L&D but was told they want people with L&D experience only that's why I am being rejected. When I asked my nurse recruiter what can I do to look more appealing - she said nothing because its based on seniority & experience. Same thing with other hospitals.

My heart has always been in women's health & ultimately I want to become a Midwife or WHNP. I want to go back to school but I'm scared to go back to school & only have experience in med-surg. Although I've decided to no longer delay going back to school, I want to have some type of nursing background in maternity when in school. Because imagine being a midwife or WHNP with experience in Med-surg only. So my question is what can I do to make myself look more appealing to nurse recruiters to get a job in these specialties? I am currently in the process of obtaining my NRP certification but I feel like it probably won't be worth anything at this point.
