Hi fellow nursing students,
Quick question. For those who have taken med surg I what is the best way to start preparing for the course? I am waiting for the syllabus and I already purchased the book. Someone one told me to review A&P. What do you all recommend?
Thanks

I'd study my Patho. That is the foundation for medsurg.

Understanding the patho goes a long way into making your life in Med-Surg easier. Unfortunately for me, it took until Med-Surg 3 for me to figure this out
The Medical-Surgical Nursing Made Incredibly Easy book is also a good supplement to your textbook--it breaks things down very nicely for you.

med/surg is not just about learning the nursing care. you also need to learn about the different medical diseases and conditions, the pathophysiology of these conditions (that means you also need to understand what the normal anatomy and physiology is so you understand how things have gone wrong) and how the doctors diagnose and treat them. you can use the critical thinking flow sheet at the end of all my posts is actually a file that you can open and copy to help you coordinate all that information for each disease or condition. a surgery is a treatment the doctors perform for something in the body that needs repair or correction. this thread has websites to help supplement information that your textbooks may not have:
i recommend you bookmark the following websites: the merck manual, family practice notebook and encyclopedia of surgery. these are the sites i go to often for information when students ask for information about diseases. medline plus is also a good place to start for good general information and weblinks for information about just about any medical subject.
if you need anatomy and physiology review, use these weblinks: https://allnurses.com/forums/2422268-post45.html. some pathophysiology has already been discussed on allnurses and i have collected them together on this post: https://allnurses.com/forums/2634117-post49.html

I would review A&P. The "Reviews and Rationales for Med Surg" should help.

- Review A&P. Patho will only be more difficult if you don't understand A&P
- For patho, I recommend pathophysiology made incredibly easy
- Know your fluid & electrolytes- I got a small pocket guide that was very helpful
- Read up on some of the older threads on allnurses.com... do a search when you don't understand a concept!
Have fun!
Thanks for all the responses. This is hepful :)

Some things that helped me get through med surg I were really knowing my ABG's and standard lab values (like K+, Ca, Na, etc..). They will teach you the ABG's in class but maybe start making some note cards on all of these things and look at them often. You will always need to know them. Good luck!
