Specializes in ICU.

So I'm beginning my second semester of nursing school in a month and I'll be taking med/surg... what exactly do you learn in med/surg? (silly question I know, just wondering):uhoh3:

Specializes in Adult Acute Care Medicine.

Everything from how to care for hip replacements to COPD to SBO to Sickle Cell Anemia.

We focused on gaining knowledge about and providing nursing care to pts w/ chronic and acute illnesses, injuries, etc. For example learning about burn pts and how to assess and treat... what is important to do immediately, what IV fluid to give...other nursing considerations..

Now that you have had pharm and patho things will make more sense. I started to feel so much like a "real nurse" during my first med surge class.

Good Luck!

In med/surg you mostly learn about all of the disease processes and how to treat them. Very interesting stuff, but a lot to remember.

You'll learn tons of diseases and disorders, the patho of them, how to assess them, how they are diagnosed, nursing interventions for them, and also what drugs are given to treat them. It's alot to remember, but I really enjoyed med/surg...alot more than the fundamentals! This is where you get into all the fun stuff :)
