Med orders -new each school year or calendar year?

Published

Question -I am a brand new school nurse in California. I've heard conflicting information about when I need new med orders. I've heard you need a new order each new SCHOOL year but i've also heard they are good for one year from the date the doc signs them. Anyone know what code dictates this? I need guidance big time!

Thanks so much!

I'm not sure if there is any state law or anything, but I always get new orders every new school year even if I just got a new order say, in the spring. I'm not going to assume that nothing has changed over a 3+ month break!

Check you school/district policy first then move onto BON. I am not in California - my district requests/prefers new orders every school year - I have orders on things both ways. I have Diabetes Mgmt plans from the local Children's Hospital will state near the doctors signature "Valid for 1 academic year" - I read that as the current school year. I have also had things like Asthma Action plans state "Valid for 1 year" which I read as 1 year from date doctor has signed the form.
