MDS Manual Revisions April 2004

Thanks Talino! :)

Talino, am I reading this right?

If I have a resident that is independent for bed mobility utilizing half siderails, but staff puts the siderails up for them, they would be coded as set-up?

Also, are we NOT supposed to be coding for long acting medications anymore, ex: Vit. b12 inj. given a month ago?

hi oceanblue...

if i have a resident that is independent for bed mobility utilizing half siderails, but staff puts the siderails up for them, they would be coded as set-up?

that's correct!. a typical example can also be seen in p 3-83 of the rai (bed mobility - under coding rationale: "resident is independent in task", add the clause "set-up help only" - revised aug. 2003.

also, are we not supposed to be coding for long acting medications anymore, ex: vit. b12 inj. given a month ago?

under section o instructions, process: "for example, if the resident received a long-acting antipschotic medication prior to assessment period (e.g., if a fluphenazine decoanate or haloperidol decoanate is given once a month) count as one drug." this entire clause has been deleted in the august 2003 revision.

count only if this medication was administered over the last 7 days (of ard)

revisions in august 2003...

Where do I look for these changes? I wouldn't have known unless I came here. Can you get updates via email?

thanks!

We have an MDS support group, it is instructed by nursing consultants in our area that are proficient in MDS, and its EVER changing ways. Each month a facility in the area hosts a new meeting to discuss various topics. It is wonderful and has been very helpful. It was started by a couple of MDS Cooridinators that were tired of always being the last to know.......lol

But is a truely wonderful program, wouldn't miss a meeting if my life depended on it.
