Hi, I just want to know if Miami Dade College Nursing program has a waiting list or not, I've heard yes and no from different people and I want to know for sure.
Thanks

I don't know why people keep saying that MDC has a waiting list.
If they did have a waiting list I would of gone there, because I had applied to the generic program in may 2003, and NEVER got in.
I kept getting rejection letters. 5 to be exact.
THey accept students semester per semester. They either accept you or dont and once you apply the first time, and pay your application fee, that fee is good for the rest of the times you apply, assuming you don't get accepted the first time around.
so, NO no waiting list for miami dade college _(boo).

Thank you, I've been getting such mixed answers on this. Thank you for clearing it up :)
Stay strong, keep trying. Have you tried other schools? Maybe Nova?
lol
I'm an RN already :) since nov. '07
back in 2003, I applied every semester for mdc, so it took me 5 rejections (one per semester).....
So in november of 2004 right after thanks giving, I got my acceptance letter to Nova :)--------- great school, very difficult & expensive.
so in 2005 probably about 2 weeks before the 5th rejection letter, I got my acceptance letter to Broward College (in ft. lauderdale), then soon after I got my acceptance letter to Manatee Community college (in bradenton)
at the time I was willing to move cities.
but since BC accepted me first, I went there. It is about a 45min drive for me.... but I didn't care.
I used to pass by MDC on I95 on my way to BC and I thought-- I'm gonna show them wrong.
And I did, and I am now without any loans, and FIU's RN-BSN is affordable, that I am paying out of pocket (I work part time so I don't get the tuition reimbursement).
when one door closes, a window opens. So just keep trying and trying.
funny thing is when I tell people my story, they say "oh I would of given up".... but you know all that time that I waited getting into BC, I knew I always wanted to get my BSN, so I just kept going to school and taking classes untill I got my AA- with the FIU requirements-- like nutrition, statistics etc. and when I wanted to start my RN-BSN I didn't have anything else to take, so I started the program right away.
:monkeydance:
oh, just to clarify this--- I did start at nova in jan 2005, but unfortunately for me (blessing in disguise at the time), I failed advanced a&P ---- very saddened me on the last day of the semester April 1st. I went to BC next door, and realized they moved the nursing office to las olas.... I'm from miami, and I was not going to go there, so I got the email and phone number from a note listed on the door.
as soon as I got home, I called -- no answer--- then I emailed. 2 hrs after I emailed, I received an email back saying that I was accepted. that was april 1st.
the days were messed up on the letter--- and my fiance suggested it was april fools joke ...... but I didn't think so because it was my BC email.
After that, the rest is history. :)

wow ... I cant believe that all that happened to you but you know i give you thumbs up when you really want something you never give up... im a senior in high school my dream is to become a nurse im trying to find out about nursing programs out there that are going to be good for me any suggestions ? my plans so far is to go to MDC to get my AA ... What do you think ???
That is good.
MDC is cheaper than FIU so that is good.
Since you are starting out, definitely get really good grades. Only A's and little amount of B's, so you have a good GPA because MDC is asking for a 3.8 GPA and above.
You calculate your GPA just like the one for your grades in HS.
You can get your AA in pre-nursing at MDC within a couple of semesters, and then on your last semester you can apply to FIU for the generic RN program.
when you go to FIU website, there is a link for nursing that tells you the required classes to take at MDC as pre-requisites so you can follow that list when you take your classes at miami dade.
then of course with good grades down your belt and your classes you should be able to get into FIU, and FIU program is 2 years.
then you will have your BSN. :)
Now if you just don't want to go to FIU, you can just follow the MDC requirements, listed on their website also, and apply to nursing school there, get in, and the program is 15 months or 4 semesters-- and you get your ASN.
Difference:
ASN= Associate's degree--- you are basically a regular RN, you can work anywhere
BSN= Bachelor's degree-- a 4 year degree-- you can work anywhere-- you have opportunity to grow in the field as in manager, supervisory positions & you have the opportunity to go on and get your master's degree right away without doing any extra school.
but you are young, and without kids, so If I were in your shoes I would definitely go for my BSN right away-- that's what I wanted to do when I accepted nova, but it didn't happen but now luckily I am back in school for that BSN :)
BTW- I wish I could go back and time and knew in my heart that this is what I wanted to do for a living.
But at the time, all I wanted to do was to party- cuz I was 18, and I had lived such a sheltered life, my mother never ever let me go out with my friends-- so when I was 18 and out of high school it was my "party" time. so I didn't care about my grades and what not.
so when my daughter is a teen I am gonna make sure that she goes to parties, goes out with her friends & has tons of activities to do, so when she is in college she doesn't have that desire to rebel like I did.
I'm not proud of what I did, like messing up in school.... but at the time I felt that it was my time to go out with my friends.
At the time they allowed 18 year olds in south beach so I would go out with a bunch of girlfriends every weekend to go clubbing-- when I was 19 they took it out, and of course I was there on the last night they had it
I by no means am trying to lecture you at all.
just giving you little tips on how to be successful
I never had that at all, I came from a poor family, I had no guidance, and to this day I am the only one that graduated from college.
I wish I would of discovered this site back in the day
Thank You very much for Both Support I will find out about everything and I will follow the BSN program ... Im very determined and Im not going to lie Ive deffinitely i have had my Fun but I really want to be someone in life and things now a days are very tough thats what makes me want to just focuse on school and be successful ... What makes me think twice is only economy because I live with my father his a plumber and he gets paid 1,000 sum bi-weekly and im scared that I may not qualify for financial aid and I know nursing can be quite expensive but hey if other people have done it I think I will get by just fine and to everything in life you have to struggle and sacrafice nothing is given so easy...

Ok that is very good that you are determined.
BTW- MDC and FIU have tons of scholarships.
They always post them on their websites, a lot just require an application an an essay.
Look in to them too. but make sure you keep your grades up so you can get them, because the higher the GPA the more scholarships you can qualify for.
and when you do well in the beginning in pre-reqs you have an easy time getting in the nursing program.... because it is very competitive.
if you need anything or any question, please you can always email me.

MDC is the hardest to get in.. You need to have like a 3.9 -4.0 overall GPA if not. i doubt you get in a Accelerated program or the Generic.. However. still apply and see... also, I would apply to other schools at the same time..
I'm sure someone can get in into MDC with a 3.6. 3.7 , 3.8. It all depends on the applicants, it all depends on whos applying. If everyone that applies has a 4.0 ( who?? I haven't met one yet) then yea it'll be hard to get into without a 3.9,4.0 But the reality is, most people DON'T have 4.0 so I also say apply for it, you got nothing to loose by applying. I have a 3.8 and I can't believe people tell me," That's not high enough" , I have the highest GPA of the people I know, if thats not "good" enough for nursing school, then i'm going into another field. So many qualified applicants being turned away because there isn't enough nursing instructors.. it will be a problem soon enough with not enough nurses. It's very irritating.
