MCQ test FOR 1ST YR.NURSING STUDENT

If your a first year nursing student, then you should be seeing questions in NCLEX format. They should be already preparing you for the NCLEX examine. In many threads here you will find diff NCLEX books being mentioned as a way to help learn. It helps mostly with understanding the rationale behind any given answer. But if your tests aren't in this type format, I dont know how you will react the first time you do see one.

Get a good Nclex-PN book, one for LPN's/LVN's. Look for one that is divided up into sections, med surg, pediatrics, ect ect. Saunders is always a favorite on this board. When you start a class, lets say pediatrics, go to that section, read through the front part and then start doing the questions. You would be surprised to found out how many teachers take test questions straight from NCLEX books. If you don't want to purchase an NCLEX book yet, go to your school library and check one out. It doesn't matter how old they are, some things never change. Just make sure and get a new one to use before you take the NCLEX.

Also, look into the cd that comes with your classroom books. Many times there are questions either on there or on a website that comes with the books. Or get the workbooks if that class has any as an option.

Another source is to do a web search on what you are studying. You might find some colleges have questions online, or maybe a nursing site has an article on the subject with questions afterwards.

But ultimately the Nclex book is the best, you will be surprised how quickly you will start being able to answer them correctly.

The NCLEX books integrate everything (i.e. med-surg, psych, OB, peds, pharmacology, A&P, etc. ) into the nursing process, and as a first year student you're going to find that much of the material in the questions is unfamiliar to you. You will benefit more from a book like Vitale and Nugent's Test Success for Beginning Nursing Students.

I disagree. I have used Saunders from day one in my nsg program & it has helped tremendously! I guess every school is different but we started immediately w/NCLEX style questions. I did as debblynn 13 did, go to the subject in the NCLEX book you are on & use this as a study guide as well as using your textbook. I know this method has worked for great for me. I am about to start my classes for ADN and have looked over our syllabus (3 inch stack of paper we had to purchase) and there are NCLEX style questions for each lecture and lab. I am glad to see that our school is preparing us for this horrendous test way ahead of time instead of springing all these types of questions in a review or preparation course.

Most important advice is do what works for you. I don't think there is one sure fire way to sucess except trying your darndest!

I was advised in 1st year to start to familiarize myself with NCLEX style questions and have used the Saunders book. Alternatively, like others have suggested you can do searches on the internet for MC questions. How about at the end of your chapters--some books have questions following each chapter.
