Nursing Students General Students

Hey everyone!!!

I am so excited to apply for the Mayo Clinic externship of 2018. I have been dreaming of it since high school.

Best of luck to everyone who applies. I truly hope that all of the most passionate nurses will get in.

I started a forum, in case we wanted to talk, and bounce questions off of each other :)

All the best xoxo

Hi everyone! I just found this forum. I got in as well!

Hey I just got accepted too! Is there a way to private message or something on here so we can get a Facebook group started or something?!

@PsychRNAlexis, congrats! I'm still waiting to hear either way. When you say you just got accepted does that mean you recently got an email like not yesterday or this morning...if so, mind sharing what time? Thanks :)

Specializes in cvicu.

There's a fb group called "Mayo clinic summer III 2018" :)

I got an email around 1pm today and it was a link that opened up to a job offer. If you don't hear anything it doesn't hurt to call them!!

Has anyone heard anything (yes or no) today? I am supposed to accept/decline a different internship this afternoon. Cutting it close!

For anyone still following this thread, I suggest you contact Mayo if you haven't heard anything from them. I emailed earlier today and asked if the final selections will be made soon and it turns out there was a glitch in the system and I was supposed to get an email from them yesterday. Thankfully, I was accepted! Anyway, just wanted to share that information and good luck to everyone! :)

hey all! i was just curious if anybody else was selected as an alternate & if anyone knows anything about being one? thanks!

I was selected as an alternate as well. If anyone who got accepted or is an alternate wouldn't mind me asking, what did you write your essay about? I wrote my essay about a personal experience that I believe has given me the ability to empathize with patients. I'm concerned it was seen as "too personal" or that I was playing the "pity card", which was not my inention at all. However, I am just trying to get some feedback on the matter. I emailed human resources at Mayo just to see if there's anyone I could speak with about my application, but I kind of doubt I will get anywhere with that.

It's difficult because I don't know if it was my grades/resume that didn't get me accepted or my essay. I know the essays weigh heavily in the applicaiton process. My background: My nursing school GPA is a 4.0 and my cumulative GPA is a 3.85. I have 4 years experience as a CNA in two different hospitals.

Anyways, I would be very appreciative of any input! Thank you in advance! :)

Hi everyone!

I was selected as a alternate for the Mayo externship. Does anyone know how many alternates they select vs how many actually end up going? Someone earlier posted asking about what other people wrote their essays about and essentially mine went over my background of the values I had growing up, how they effected who I am now and how they will play into the nurse I would become. My GPA is a 3.04 but I am involved on my local nursing board and am on the state board for nursing along with various other academic/service organizations on my campus.

Hi everyone, I was accepted into Mayo's program! I wanted to contribute to this thread to answer a few people's questions and to leave a record for future Mayo applicants. First, a little bit about the application cycle this year:

1. Initial applications were due on 1/15.

2. Those who were selected into the "top 100" (we actually don't know for sure how many were moved to the second round but I'm just assuming it was 100 based on past years) found out on 1/29. Those who didn't get accepted didn't receive notifications until 2/1.

3. The due date for submitting additional application materials (unofficial transcript and unit preference list) was 2/5.

4. Acceptances/wait-lists began to come out on 2/14. Some were also sent on 2/15. I don't know when "rejection" emails were sent or if acceptances were sent out later than 2/15. The email with the acceptances instructed us to log-in to our Mayo applicant portals where we saw the "acceptance letters".

Here is a little about me/my application.

1. Cumulative GPA: 3.6 (I have another degree in a "hard" science and struggled due to some personal issues which I explained in my essay).

2. Nursing GPA: 4.0

3. Extracurricular: I was named nursing student of the year for my state, on my state's SNA board, established new volunteering connections for SNA, heavily involved with mentoring programs at school, volunteer for several years at a hospital and non-medical related positions.

4. Work experience: Varied work history, 4 years experience in home health, 1 year experience as an aid in the ICU.

5. Essay: outlined involvement in school, community, and job. Discussed my "personal story", mentioned some of my achievements, shared how my philosophy lines up with Mayo's philosophy. I incorporated some of their core values I identified with into the essay along with parts of their mission statement that I felt were important to me. I got advice to incorporate Mayo specific terminology was given to me by a student at my school who did their internship at Mayo last year.

If any future applicants have questions, please feel free to message me. If I get the notification, I'll happily respond. Good luck to everyone in all of their endeavors!

Hi! I was just curious if you had heard back from Mayo at all?
