hey I'm a junior nursing student at lake superior state university and I just finished applying to the summer iii program. Is there anybody else out there who has applied??? I live in michigan and I heard that they do phone interviews. I really hope I get in!!! I have a 3.4 and have been working on a ambulance/fire department for the past 2 years as a fire fighter/emt. I hope that helps!! does anybody know when the interviews are done? hope to hear back!!
Congrats UpintheAir,
Are you local to Rochester? I am long time Mayo employee, recent RN graduate. I am sure they will prep you well before you get here. If you have questions, I will help or at least get you pointed in the right direction. Our RN class has a facebook page: fourth semester RCTC ADN, if you want to get in touch with other recent RN graduates in Rochester
hey guys, i've heard mixed reviews on this internship. it's awesome to be associated with the mayo clinic, but i've heard you do not get a lot of direct nursing experience, more of stocking things and such. Peolpe taht have done the internship or people that work there that are familar with the duties/amount of true rn experience... could you please input : )
i guess i should say the rest of my situation... i've been accepted into the mayo clinic, but interview with university of michigan and methodist in houston next week. has anyone done either of those internships before? I know it sound crazy that I'm looking into so many thing, but I want to get into the best internship possible. I just don't where that is exactly without your help... : )
I was just reading this post because I was searching to find out if Mayo's hiring more now. I was a Summer III in 2008 and absolutely loved it. I worked in adult psych and was so impressed with the staff, unit and Mayo in general. I was just floored when the medical director of the psych building asked my opinion on a patient's situation, since back in Missouri during nursing clinicals the doctors would barely make eye contact with the nursing students. It just showed me that they care about their employees, the staff respects each other and values their opinions, and that the relationship between doctors and nurses was better than I had seen anywhere else in my limited experience. One nurse there told me a lot of nurses who work at Mayo end up coming back sometime in their career, because it's hard to find another hospital that treats you as well as they do.
As far as my role as a Summer III, I got to do everything a nurse would do on that unit besides actually passing medications. Even for that though, I was with my preceptor and she would quiz me about each med and its uses, side effects, etc. While you're there, you'll have access to the fitness center which is amazing. It was definitely worth the money to join for the summer.
I cannot say enough wonderful things about my time at Mayo. I was set to work there after graduation last May, but then the hiring freeze started. If I had the opportunity, I would gladly move back. I know every unit there is different, but I generally heard from other interns that they had a great time too and learned a lot. I hope you all enjoy it there!
