Hi there! I just recently applied to Mayo as a new grad, but haven't heard anything back yet (it's only been two days). I graduate in May so my plan would be to start in the summer if offered a position. Congrats on your job offer! I hear it's an amazing place to work. How long did it take you to initially hear from them after you submitted an application? -Melissa

Awesome! Mayo Clinic sounds like a great place to me too! I first started by working with a nursing placement coordinator. He helped me with the application to the unit I wanted. 2 days after I applied, I got a call to schedule an interview. It went so fast for me because I worked with a placement coordinator first. Since he knew this was my dream job, he really helped me get an interview. It was awesome! My advice is to contact a recruiter (nurse placement coordinator). Also, apply for any job that interests you. Soon enough, you'll get picked, and I'll see you in the summer!

If I am lucky enough to be offered a position, I would be moving from New York, so it would be quite a big change! Hi! Here is the email address for the nurse residency program: [email protected]. I contacted them first, and explained that I had a few questions for a nurse recruiter. They then hooked me up with the placement coordinator (same thing). I'm actually relocating from Montana. Mayo Clinic is amazing! I have actually never been to the facilities, but I can't speak enough about how kind they all were. They made the whole process simple. The interview was great too! Basically, here's how it goes:

Interview over webcam.

1st interview: 45 mins- talk about job description. Answer a couple behavioral questions "give us a time you did ____"

2nd interview 1.5 hours (right after the first interview, so be ready to sit for almost 2.5 hours!)- mostly behavioral questions, with a couple scenario questions (who do you see first).

Tips:

1.) PREPARE. I spent a lot of time preparing for behavioral questions. I just wanted to say the right words to convey how enthusiastic I was about working there. Also, think of some examples BEFORE your interview about your clinical experience, work experience, etc. That way, when they ask you for examples, you have a few that you've practiced. Definitely don't make things up, but just practice how you'll phrase your experience.

Mayo Clinic looks for the following format when answering behavioral questions: the SHARE model

S Describe a specific Situation

H Identify Hindrances or challenges

A Explain the Action that you took

R Discuss the Results or outcome

E Evaluate or summarize what you learned

2.) Sell yourself to them. They're a business who wants to make sure they get the best nurses. So focus on how you help them accomplish goals/patient outcomes.

3.) When asked scenario questions: explain in DETAIL what your thoughts are for each patient, your diagnoses, your interventions, and intended outcomes. Don't forget to delegate in these scenarios. For example: "You have 4 patients: 1- Diabetes, 2- Hip replacement, 3- Cancer, 4- Whipple surgery. Who do you see first"

They'll give some sort of hint during the question. However, they care LESS about the order of the patient, and MORE about your thought process. How will you assess them? How will you intervene? Talk it out as if you're speaking to a non-nurse. I didn't do so well on the first scenario in my interview, and this is the advice I got. I just thought I'd share :)

These are just general tips that I received from one of my teachers before I applied. I hope they help. Good luck, and keep applying! What area are you hoping to work?

Oh, wow! I cannot begin to thank you enough for all of that information -- so helpful! I have never had a behavioral-type interview before, so I'll definitely be a little nervous should I get offered an interview. Was this a phone or video interview since you live out of state, or did you travel to Mayo? How exciting though that you have such an amazing job and now you can just focus on finishing school! It's difficult to study and job hunt at the same time. I was offered an interview today at a local hospital, so hopefully I can get some good interviewing practice! It's actually a great job and I would be lucky to get it, but I have my heart set on Mayo. Did you apply to any other hospitals? Thanks again! -Melissa

Mine was a video interview, but my phone was used for the audio portion. That's exciting about the job interview! Either way, it will be good practice. For me, it gave me a lot of anxiety to think of all the places I COULD end up. It was nice to get an offer, and just know that's where I needed to be... rather than worry about where I'll live for the next few years.

I applied at Houston Methodist, and a couple other hospitals in the Mountain West.

I hot hired on a PCU medical cardiology floor. It's definitely my dream job!
