Hello All,
I saw a job posting in my area for a position in a Maternal Intensive/ Special Care Unit. I was wondering if anyone has worked in that type of unit and what the job actually consists of. The posting seemed rather unique to me, this was a women's hospital in my area. Any info is appreciated :)

I worked in a hospital with a high risk L&D which had a Perinatal unit as well. In that setting pregnant women with critical health needs were cared for in the unit...so the 24 wk gravid with say...trauma...or a medical or surgical emergency...would be cared for there. Clearly those with complicated pregnancies were there...eclampsia, DIC, etc.
I enjoyed working there as I had ICU experience...so tubes, lines, and technology added to the enjoyment for me.

Wow that sounds amazing!! I have always been interested in L&D, but I'm a critical care nurse now and love it. That sounds like the best of both worlds! Where do I find this type of job?? lol
Wow, that does sound like the best of both words. What is the usual nurse: patient ratio? Thats wonderful you are able to enjoy OB and have that ICU experience.
That was years ago...I don't really know how that department functions in that hospital now.
It was a really good fit for me at the time.

The Maternal ICU in my area takes cases like DIC post delivery, mag, and severe pre-E. It's kind of a catch-all for ante- and postpartum women who need more care than a mother-baby nurse with 3-4 other couplets can provide but who aren't necessarily suited for L&D.
