Boston Children's Hospital- B.S.N. Only?

U.S.A. Massachusetts

Published

Hi,

I am wondering if anyone who works at BCH or who otherwise has some information can answer as to whether they are absolutely against hiring a non-B.S.N. R.N., even if I am in a R.N.-B.S.N. program with an expected graduation date of 12/2015.

I am an experienced paramedic and ED RN and am really hoping to get into theirs, as I love taking care of the kids in my current position, which has a high pediatric volume.

Thank you for any information!

Hi Happy, yes, BSN only and even then you pretty much have to have a connection to get in. I have been applying for six years with a BSN, advanced certifications, and previous peds and ED experience. There are definitely some politics involved.

That is too bad... they are missing out on some talented nurses I bet!!

There are also a lot of nurses who meet the BSN requirement and have lots of talent. Boston Children's Hospital knows it is popular with the applicants and can afford to set their bar higher for hiring.

Your Paramedic card is not going to be a substitute for a higher degree especially at a children's hospital.

I don't remember claiming that it would, nor did I claim there were no BSN graduates with talent!

The answer is yes, BSN only for new hires. As the only free-standing Children's Hospital in New England, they know they have applicants lined up wanting to work for them. Be warned that IF you obtain employment with them that also means that they will view you as easily replaceable. They also prefer (at least they did when I left) to hire new grads, as they can pay them less than experiences nurses and mold them into what they want.
