MPCU New Grad at JHH

U.S.A. Maryland

Published

Hi!

I interviewed at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore for a July 2017 start date (I'll be graduating this May) for a new grad position on their MPCU and I was offered the job! I'm accepting the position and cannot be more excited! The plan is to move down to Maryland but to live outside of Baltimore to the south at a halfway point between Baltimore and DC since my bf lives there. I was wondering if anyone had any good suggestions of where to live or any tips about working at JHH/Baltimore.

Hi @nurseprl!!! I currently work at JHH, I would advise looking as close to the hospital as you can, Canton or Butchers's hill area...parking will run you at least 120 a month at JHH. You can also look near the JHU campus and shuttle in. I park on the street and a parking violation will run you 53$

Hey @nurseprl!

We have a lot in common! I also start working at Johns Hopkins in July as a new grad. Maybe we'll orient together! I've worked on my unit at Hopkins as an extern for almost a year now and I was born and grew up in Baltimore so I'm very familiar with the area. My boyfriend however lives in DC as well. I can tell you from personal experience that it's a bit much to drive to and from, especially because the traffic can be crazy at certain times. Usually 7A-7P shifts are okay because the traffic has died down but if you were to work at overnight shift you would probably have to leave by 5-530P just in case of traffic.

Just like they said above, I would definitely recommend living in Baltimore just because of parking costs alone. However if you're set on going closer to DC, I would recommend the Howard County/Ellicot City/Columbia area or Laurel. If you're looking long term theyre building a train which should be done within the next 4 years that can take you from Baltimore to DC & back in 15 minutes. Baltimore is much cheaper than DC so I'd recommend your boyfriend moving here í ½í¸ƒ I can say that I 100% prefer Baltimore over DC because it has more of a charming city feel and the people here are much more down to earth and friendly than in DC. Just my opinion!

Congrats and good luck with your new position!

Hey @nurseprl!

We have a lot in common! I'm graduating in May and will be starting an RN position at Hopkins in July! Maybe we'll orient together! I've lived and grown up in Baltimore my entire life and have worked as an extern at Hopkins for a year. My boyfriend lives in DC as well so I know a lot about both of the areas. From personal experience I would definitely recommend living in Baltimore rather than somewhere in between just because the parking costs are so expensive. Traffic can be absolutely crazy at times as well especially if you're working an overnight shift and travelling around 730A. It's also a lot having to work a 12-13 hr shift and have almost an hour long drive before/after! If you're set on living in the middle through I would recommend Ellicot City, Columbia, or Laurel. They are all good in between points and nice areas. If you're looking long term they're currently building a train that travels from Baltimore to DC and from DC to Baltimore in 15 minutes. I don't know anything about the costs or expected finishing date for it but it would be worth looking into. If you do end up moving to one of the cities I would 100% recommend Baltimore over DC. It's much cheaper here, has more of a charming/city vibe, and the people are much more down to earth and friendly. Just my opinion!

Good luck and congrats on your new job!

Thanks for the advice! That parking violation is expensive

It's great to hear from people also starting their orientation in July! Congrats on getting the job as well!!! It looks like as of right now we're looking to live outside of a major city to start off with and get a feel for whether we can each handle our respective commutes and if it turns out the commute is a big inconvenience for one of us then we would probably move closer to that city. But thank you for all the advice! I'm thinking of looking at places in Maryland that are close to either a metro/train station or something of the sort so that it can alleviate some of the commuting for night shift since, like you said, the commute in the morning would be terrible. Driving from Baltimore south at around 8am would be pretty bad right? I appreciate all the advice! I'm coming from out of state so I really don't have that great of a grasp on the area

Hey! we all have a lot in common lol. I graduate this month too on May 10th. I flew in from out of town and interviewed for the MPCU on April 28th. She called me 3 hrs later and offered me the position and I will accept. I have an August 28th start date. That gives me time to get things in order for relocation, n clex etc. My boyfriend lives in baltimore county. I def dont want a long commute. Im going to try and find somewhere not too far but nice and safe. Did you get your offer letter yet? Its only been A few days but I just wanna make sure that we just wait for the official offer letter and accept at that point??

Hi! I'm so excited to hear from another new grad starting in the MPCU!!! I interviewed on Friday and then on Monday the director of the unit called me to let me know I was being offered the job and I happened to verbally accept over the phone. Then the next day, Tuesday, I got the email from the recruiting office with the offer letter. Since I posted the original post, I got an apartment with my bf in Howard County, MD so we're both going to have a commute but we're going to try it out for at least a year and then figure it out from there. I know that sometime in June I have to go in and sign an official contract/offer letter in person when I do my occupational health check-up if that helps?

My email Is [email protected], maybe we can keep in touch through this process! I know you said your starting in July and I'm starting in august so you may know a little more. I emailed my recruiter today to accept the position and she told me to Be looking for an official offer letter in my email!! I'm relocating from out of state so i def need to find a place!! Looks like I'll have to come back to And sign and do the occ visit etc! I'm so excited! I'm sure we will meet at some point :)

Yeah I'd love to keep in touch! Do you know of anyone else starting at MPCU this summer? I'm also relocating from out of state; I'm moving from NJ in June so I'm hoping that I can get settled in, take the NCLEX and make it in time for the July start date. Yeah I'm sure we'll definitely meet! And the other nurses on the floor who I met during my interview seemed to be really close and were really nice so I'm excited to be working with everyone!

In another thread I think it's John Hopkins Residency 2017, someone said their friend got a position on the MPCU starting July 31st but I don't know them personally. I'm relocating from Phx lol but I was born in md with plenty of close family friends and my bf so it's no big deal. I'm on the same time table, hoping to take N CLEX in June and move prolly end of July/ early august. The august start date gives me some time to get things in order. Who did you interview with?? And yes everyone was so nice -from the nurse recruiters to the person I interviewed with I loved her! And then the other nurses seemed cool too!!

I'll be sure to look for that post, thanks! I interviewed with Eleni and Shelly!! Yeah I agree it was a really great process overall. They really know how to make us feel welcome. Did they suggest the August date to you or did you ask for it? I'm just a little nervous that it might be too soon for me but I'm going to really try and get things in order in time for the July date. Also, were you thinking of moving into one of the suburbs outside Baltimore in Maryland or living in Baltimore? I was debating between the two but we're just going to try it out in a suburb for now.
