Maricopa County nursing program questions

I live in Arizona, but not the Phoenix area. I am currently doing my pre-reqs and trying to meet the pre-reqs for about 5 community college RN programs :uhoh3: in Arizona, in order to minimize waitlist time.

Are Nutrition and Human Development incorporated into Maricopa's nursing program like pathophysiology recently was? Or is it that Maricopa just doesn't require Nutrition and Human Development?

Thank you for any info. ;)

Nutrition is no longer a pre-req so I am assuming that it will be incorporated into the program....Human Development also isn't a pre-req for the ADN programs but it is one for ASU....I hope this helps....good luck!

Interesting. Nutrition and Human Development are both required for the program in Tucson, at Pima Community College and another CC in AZ. I think Pima's ADN is up to almost 80 credits. They have a 3 year wait-list though.

I have an option of taking Nutrition this summer with a FANTASTIC instructor and it would just fit my schedule so well. But I'm probably going to end up at a Maricopa County program. What do you think of taking Nutrition now, if I end up in Maricopa County?

Thing is, even if Nutrition is incorporated, won't BSN programs still require a separate Nutrition class? I want to go back for the BSN eventually.

ASU still requires Nutrition so I would go ahead and take it. Believe it or not, Nutrition really helped me with my Pharm class because my Nutrition instructor spent alot of time on absorption and excretion of drugs and nutrients....ASU alo still repuires Patho whereas the MCCD has incorporated that into the program as well.....If you still need to take Patho I would recommend that you take it while you are waiting to get into the program. Since the CC's no longer require it they'll offer it less which means you would have to pay twice the amount of money to take it at ASU.....

The MCCD program is really a great option. Most of us thought that the wait times would go up since they changed the requirements but a lot of people I know who applied during Fall application week have been placed for Fall so thay only had to sit out one semester. It will all depend on which schools you put down as choices. For instance, MCC admitted 70 people whereas Rio only had 5 open slots for the public.

From what I understand, the schools will be increasing the number of students admitted every semester. For instance MCC normally allows 70 people in Fall and 50 people in Spring. Our class was told that they will now be admitting 70 people every semester. They have enough classroom space but they are having a hard time finding clinical rotations. As a result, we'll probably start seeing some "untraditional" hours/days for clinical rotations. SCC now has alot of one day/12 hours clinicals and some schools are getting more weekend rotations. I hope we get some of those!

That's really great that the wait-list time is getting better! Also interesting that Nutrition helped you with Pharm. I would have never thought of that. I'm thinking that some people underestimate how challenging Nutrition class can be. I know the syllabus for the class I'm going to take states something like "consider this a science class, and plan on no less than 15 hours per week studying, no extra credit, be prepared for chemistry and cell biology" etc.

Thank you for the info! I think I'll take: Statistics, Human Development, pathophysiology and something else during my semester wait.

My nutrition class was mainly chemistry and cell biology, I got really sick and tired of talking about the Krebs cycle lol!...IKWYM...most people think they'll go in and just learn about the major food groups....it's much more than that lol! My instructor was really big on the chem stuff so it really helped once I entered the program.....Good luck with your classes!

Do the accelerated programs tend to have longer wait-list times? And do you know if they have (at least!) a week off in between semesters?

The accelerated programs are not part of the "lottery" system. Admission is usually based on GPA, interviews, essays, etc....If your GPA is high then you could actually be accepted for the following semester. The only drawback is that some of the accelerated programs require a work commitment. The Gateway partnership with Banner requires a 3 year work commitent. I'm not sure if the SCC program does. I don't think it does but I'm not absolutely sure....The accelerated programs usualy do have a couple of weeks off in between semesters....

Wow! I had no idea. What kind of GPA would you think (best guess) gets accepted?

Looking at the placement link I'm thinking my first choice would be Scottsdale accelerated for public non-employee. Unless of course I hear it's a horrible program etc.

I'm not sure but I would shoot for at least a 3.5

Nutrition and PSY (human develop) are both co-requesites, not pre-reqs. So most people take them prior because our waiting list is so long. But, our CI just told us that since Pima is instituting a summer program, that 50 people just got bumped up a semester. Maybe get yourself on the list and see what happens....
