Manual Blood Pressures

Published

I feel like an idiot asking this, I really do.

But please tell me the steps to get a manual blood pressure? Its been a year since I first done one, and I haven't practiced since. I forgot where to put in the exact position the cuff (how many inches above the antecubital space?), as well as where to put the stethoscope on (do I insert it into the cuff, or do I put it below?

I've been so used to getting BPs with automatics I have trouble with manuals. Plus having a bad stethoscope does not help.

Cmon nurses, help a poor soul.

Specializes in Hem/Onc, LTC, AL, Homecare, Mgmt, Psych.

Hopefully by now you've just googled it to get your information.

But look in your nursing fundamentals book and it will walk you through it.

Or go on youtube I'm sure there are educational videos on the topic.

and get a good stethoscope!

I agree that you should spend some time in your fundamentals book. It is your best source of nformation. Having said that... remeber there are 5 seperate sounds you are listening for. That will have relavance in terms of if you are assessing an adult or peds, etc. I'm not going to go on, becuse I'm not a nursing instructor. I hope it peaks your curiosity and you hit the books.

Don't stop asking questions. You striving to find out what you're unsure of is a good thing! It's the person that pretends they know what they are doing that scares me.

Keep up the good work. :yeah:
