I'm actually starting here for fall semester, I was wondering if anyone here has attended MCC venice, knows which professors are good and what not.
Any contributions will be helpful, thanks!

My professors have been great at MCC Bradenton. Also, you will not be able to pick your professors. You will have one clinical instructor that is assigned to your group/hospital and one lecture instructor. Good luck

As majaka has stated, unfortunately you do not get to chose your nursing instructors. I have heard though that the Venice Campus got a whole updated nursing building, so you'll enjoy that. I'll be starting at MCC Bradenton in their new night program. Do you have to attend the orientation in Bradenton on Friday (7/14), if so, I'll see you there!

how is manatee cc?? oh and how are you doing in the program?
Hi Bumblebee, after a few false starts, I just finished my first semester at MCC Bradenton. I enjoyed and miss it now that it is summer! I'm actually counting down till I start back up again in August.

Awesome!
My friend graduated from there in bradenton's MCC campus back in may 07. She said it was good. She said that after the second semester they told the class "you guys have proved yourselves that you deserve to be here- we will help you make it to the end"
I was in shocked that the instructors would say that.
Not at BCC where I went!!!!!

I have to say that from the very start, they want us to succeed. This is not to say that they were easy on us for what is required, but they weren't looking for us to fail. The truth is the way they had the program set up, entering via a waiting list versus entering on merit, did create a higher attrition rate. Because of the high fail rate on the NCLEX last year, they have decided to change things up in the fall (which I totally support). Passing is now going to be an 80% and higher grade for prereqs are required before applications will be accepted (B's in A&P and micro). I think we would have lost more students this semester because there were many that were just looking for the 75%.
Where is BCC? Is that Broward?

I can understand that merrit is very important. But I did not have A's or B's in my science classes. On some, I had to repeat because of a failure or I dropped out- since I was never planning to go to nursing school- I figured it was not a big deal to take classes again.
Little did I know at the time that it would count against me- and I would have a hard time getting into my local community college.
I applied at MCC because miami dade college wasnt' taking me, so I decided to get on the MCC wait list- and also BCC-broward community college wait list- I also applied to NOVA southeastern U. I got into those three- failed A&P at NOVA- then went straight to BCC and was successfull there because I am an RN already:nurse:.
If I would of gotten the MCC letter instead of the BCC letter first, I would of probably moved there (bradenton) and moved in with my friend who was already in the program there- just a semester ahead.
wow 80% to pass classes now??
That is gonna get pretty tough.
AT BCC- we had to have a 73% and still even with that- 50% out of our class failed first semester. .... and people still managed to fail some other classes along the way.
But anyways- I belive that with hard work, anything is possible. Just study super hard.
The best advice I ever got from another nursing student was to get an NCLEX-RN study book from the first semester.
She told me to get "Saunders comprehensive review for NCLEX-RN" ... and I used it from my first semester all the way to the end. It has most of the topics discussed in class.
I told that to people- one girl who was my friend before nursing school started a year after me- she was so cheap- and did not want to spend $$ so did not buy it. she failed.
Next semester- she wanted to borrow mine- I was in my last medsurg class so I was still using it. towards the end of the semester she bought it and passed. But the following semester she ended up failing- so she is out of school. and now she is looking into LPN programs around the area.
So the moral of my story- you study what you have to study- never take anything for granted. If someone recommends a great book to you- just get it, it's an investment for your education.
Hey Bumblebee,
Well, to me it sounds like you took your nursing education seriously and worked your butt off (Congrats on the RN), so the prereq requirement would have lost out on you if that was so. I think the goal behind this requirement is to make nursing applicants realize that they need to develop good study habits before getting into the nursing program. It's one thing not to do well in A&P due to the difficulty level, but if a student is only striving to pass with that C if that is all that is required, they are really short-changing themselves because someway or the other, A&P is going to haunt them throughout nursing school.
I totally agree with you in regards to a NCLEX book. I've had the Saunders for a while and I just picked up the Illustrated Guide which I was told by students in upper levels was a great resource. I'm a book lover and very open to look at other sources besides just my textbook.
Are you working down in Miami still? I work part time at SMH, and hope to work there my first two years when I finish. Then I'm headed back up to NY.
me too! I am a book lover too! I just sold a bunch of my books- and regret selling a peds book that i see a lot of people using for the CPN exam (certified pediatric nurse exam).
A&P is important- but who will remember all that detailed information in nursing school- you relearn basics when you are in the lecture anyways.
Oh yeah, I am not a good candidate for A LOT of schools- I was very lucky for waiting lists!
My friend always told me good stories about MCC, & life in bradenton..... she had an apartment and paid less than what she did here in miami for an efficiency.
I still live in miami, and probably will be here for the rest of my life- no plans to move anywhere, eventhough I would love to.
when my daughter turns 18 and is in college- I would like to do travel nursing. I am 27 now and have 16 years to go! so at 43 I will still be young to accomplish my dream of being a travel nurse + by that time I will have tons of experience in the field.

What area of pediatrics are you working in? Are you in a children's hospital?
Bradenton is okay, I'm just missing the hustle and bustle of NY.
