Manager Interview - Mayo Clinic

Specialties Operating Room

Published

Hi team! I am scheduled for an interview for the Surgical Services nurse manager at a Mayo Clinic hospital in a smaller town (not Rochester). Although I have nine years of circulating, scrubbing, lead surgical coordinator, and clinical education specialist all in the operating room, this is my first time interviewing for a management position. Any advice from other leadership experiences? Any advice for a new manager from the staff perspective? Thank you!

Congrats on the opportunity to interview!  Where I work (Stanford) , managers and directors are usually interviewed by a panel of staff nurses and CSTs , followed by another interview by Assistant Patient Care Managers , Managers and directors and possibly a surgeon /anesthesiologist or two. The best advice I can give you, is be sincere, honest and think about situations you have been during your career so that when the panel asks you the typical behavioral questions you have good and appropriate scenarios and examples to draw on. Research the hospital and position well before your interview. Know what their strengths are in terms of surgeries performed, case load, number of ORs, significant milestones etc. Have well thought out questions to ask the panels that indicate you have done your research. Dress professionally  (even if its a Zoom interview) . Log in on time/ arrive punctually. Have a clear idea what your vision is for the position and that it ties in with the hospital/ organizations Mission Statement and Vision/ values. Lastly, ensure that your resume is detailed and accurate and reflects your experience, education and qualifications to your best advantage. Best of luck! Let us know how it goes.
