Malpractice Ins and CNM's (vent)

Published

I found out today that the ob's and cnm's in my state are being driven out by outrageous insurance rates. :angryfire Something must be done. I refuse to lose my CNM to the insurance companies. And since I am considering becoming a CNM it has me worried. Talking with my CNM today I found out some women are travelling over 2 hours to have a baby. WHAT!! So where do I start? Who do I write letters to? I will not take this lying down. Does anyone know which states have decent malpractice rates and what is affecting them. I know we are having an ob crisis in many states but what I want to know is which states aren't having an issue. What are those states doing differently. And to be honest I didn't know my state was on the border of one. Can't imagine what it is like in the states with a full blown crisis.

The worst of it is that the poorer women will suffer the most. Insurance reimbursement rates are down and malpractice up. So in any other business that would be passed onto the consumer. Yet dr/cnms are locked into what the insurance company is willing to pay. So dr/cnms will start dropping insurance patients and only accepting private pay. Well I can afford for my routine checkups (hubby is fixed) but what about those who can't. What about the women who are pg and poor. Their babies already start out with more risk and do we really need to add no prenatal care to that.

Thanks for letting me vent. :angryfire

You are just finding about this now? I left Arizona in 1994 and it was going on then. Many of the OB docs were changing over back then to just doing GYN. It is happenening all over not just Arizona. I used ot work with an Ob/Gyn and he had a large practice because he accepted Access insurance back then when many of the doctors were stopping.................actually got paid much quicker than from the private insurance companies back then also, not sure how it it today.................

Look at the insurance rates for Neurosurgeons, CRNAs, and Aneshtesiologists.................. :uhoh21:

Well I just started nursing and am still a student. It terrifies me that we will have no one to help deliver babies one day.

this is an issue affecting CNMs all over the country. i agree, it's infuriating.

I talked to my CNM about it and she says it's really not an issue for her (yet). As of now the docs are the ones being charged insane rates, whereas her rates are still pretty decent. I live in Maryland.

Hello to all!!!!

The big issue is not only Docs and CNMS, but the facts that if a CNM wants to have her own practice w/o having to be w/ a OBGYN then she is fried..

IN NYS the rates are impossible .... Lobby day for Midwifes was April 27th and this issue was brough up as well as the question of Hospital Priviledges and the difference of reimbursment rates for Medicaid for CNM's and OB's guess who is winning the higher rate of reimbursment ....

florida passed a malpractice cap last year for pain and suffering rewards, it was getting really bad here and i knew a perfectly good ob who had to move out of state over it. i don't know if passing that cap has helped or not. it seems to go in waves in different areas, gets better for a while then bad again and so on (but never really being satisfactory of course!). i am a future midwife too and of course very concerned!!

go to http://www.acnm.org and use their speak out section to find out what's going on where, how you can help, and to write the appropriate politicians.

i hope that everyone who reads this will take 2 minutes to do the automated politician letters- it's very important if we want to keep cnms a viable option!
