Males in L&D

Published

I'll be graduating in one year and thus far I've really enjoyed my L&D rotation, it's been my favorite. The privledge to be part of a human beings dynamic physiological changes as they happen, and witness the cycle of life is absolutely fascinating; and ostensibly for the most part it's a happy happy joy joy time. In terms of patient care I view myself as a healthcare professional, as far as gender I have no alternative, I'm a man. I personally know two male RN's, one straight and one gay who have been L&D nurses for the last twenty years. Listening to them speak this week at the Men in Nursing Conference was inspiring, and really started me thinking again about L&D as a real option. I'd love to hear everyones opinion on males in L&D.

Hi! I currently work in L&D at a local hospital. Where I work we don't have any males, but across the street (we are a low risk facility, all others go across the street to the main hospital) they do have male nurses. no real reason why they do there and we dont, but I think its great if we would have male nurses! i would say 75% of our dr's are male, so I dont think pts would have a problem with having a male nurse. my advise is if you do become and L&D nurse, walk in with confidence when meeting your pts. and it will make the pts. more comfortable. do what you want, dont let your gender effect your life decision, you have to do what makes YOU happy regardless if you are a male or female. everyone deserves to be happy. the worst that can happen is you will have a few pts. say they would prefer to not have male nurses. there are plenty of other pts. who would be happy to have you as a nurse and that pt. is missing out on a great nursing experience!
