50 and making a dream come true.

Published

I have attempted to get into nursing some 15 or so years ago. I wanted to be a doctor growing up, but once I realized the amount of schooling it requires, I decided nursing is the next best bet. I got thru most of the pre-reqs and then found myself having premature babies and it was just too much stress. I quit and waited for life to settle down. That time is now! I am a bit worried about my age and getting hired after school. This is a main goal as part of my bucket list. My husband is now diabled and its my turn to give back. I want this..I can taste it! As a youth I don't think I took school seriously, but I know this is a new beginning for me and my husband. My question is; is a age a major issue, when it comes to accepting people in the nursing program? Or does grades speak for themselves?

42 and nearing the end of my LPN program :) Making my dream come true!

I started nursing school at 52, graduated with an ADN at 54 and just turned 57 this week and am in the last week of my BSN. I will continue with my schooling to get my NP by the age of 60. I cut my hair short, color it red and spike it with glue, I pull off looking like I'm in my 40's. I got hired at my current job because they were cutting over to a computer system and were afraid that they were going to lose their older nurses, which they did. Age is just a number in your head, you can continue on until you get your DNP if you want............Never give up. Never surrender!

Congrats on pursuing your dream! I too have felt the same way and considered not even bothering! I'm 48... On Saturday I received my acceptance letter to a BSN program. I will be 50 when I graduate! While my birth certificate says my biological age, my body and mind say wwwayyyy younger! :) The way I look at it is though that even when we reach an age that floor nursing may not be the ideal job, there are soooooooo many options for nurses! Good luck!!!
