Magnet Hosp?

Nurses General Nursing

Published

I was in the process of looking for a call in postion at a hospital where they are trying to get magnet status. When I called HR I was basically told need not apply until I get my BSN because they are trying for magnet status. Which is fine with me because I already have a full time job. But it made me curious. When I looked on the internet a magnet hosp "recognizes health care organizations that provide nursing excellence" I didn't see anything about all the nurses working at the hospital need to have a BSN. So I'm just wondering if anyone else heard this?? Info would be great...Thanks :specs:

This my opinion only, but I'd rather work with an LPN with a few years experience than some RN's who think they know everything but have little to no experience. I have had the great fortune to work with some terrific and quite knowledgeable LPN's. They taught me a thing or 2. In fact in my old hospital they even precepted me. Experience, really does make a difference if you are an LPN or an RN. It really grates on me when employers push BSN stuff down your throat. Some of us can't afford the money or time to go back to school. Yes, I started on my BSN but my kids and their education have to come first. When are hospitals going to learn that caring, compassionate and experienced people come with different letters behind their name. Where's Oliver Stone when I need him, maybe it's a conspiracy to keep us from banding together. Just think, if all nurses, no matter what their education came together, what kind of power for change in the health industry we would have. Kind of interesting to think about.

This is exactly what I am saying...we ALL need to band together. Stop these different fractions, stop comparing notes on who is the real nurse, who has the real education and who is the best. We ALL exist NOW, and need to get it together. And, in my eye, Magnet does nothing to support that.

It really amazes me that nurses have not banded together. With our knowledge, our work ethic, compassion and devotion, nurses could change the world. We are the eyes and ears of phyisicans. We did with hostile work environments, hostile physician, pt.s and families. If we would stop arguing amongst ourselves and band together we would and could change our industry. Why do we allow ourselves to be belittled as professionals. Do lawyers or doctors accept this behavior, I think not. Why do we allow ourselves to be told that mandatory overtime is an acceptable alternative to the hospital poor retention practices or poor wages and that crappy insurance that we pay so much for. Why do the CEO' s of hospitals make so much. Why do they pay hundred's of thousands of dollars just so they can be called magnet. Give me a break.
