LVN trying to get ER experience

Hi all!

I am currently an LVN returning to school shortly for my RN/BSN. I am very interested in travel nursing and the Emergency Room. I am planning on trying to volunteer in an ER to learn with hope of working in the ER as an LVN and then with an RN/BSN. Has anyone done this or have advice on getting into the ER as an LVN, or any advice/personal stories about beginning travel nursing? Thanks!

Do you want to travel as an LVN to get ER experience?

Do the ER to get a jump on being an ER RN. There are no travel jobs for LVNs in the ER I think I can safely say. Do they still use LVNs in the ER where you are going to school? If not, think about getting a tech job in the ER.

Ideally I want to be a traveling nurse who works in the ER. I'm okay with starting in other depts as a travel LVN as I know that LVNs are not used anywhere near as often as RNs in the ER. I was just thinking that maybe a hospital would be willing to let me volunteer in thier ER if I'm employed in another unit of thier hospital. I know I could try this as a non travel nurse but I really want to start traveling! Any advice or personal stories would be great, thank you!

I'm not in the RN program yet; I know of a few hospitals in my area (So. Cal) the hire LVNs in the ER and of some that hire them as Techs. I'm very willing to be a tech but I don't think they are used that often and I really want to start traveling. Right now I'm doing Pediatric Home Health with mostly vent pts and I don't feel that I'm learning much anymore, its just not for me...

There isn't much market for travel pediatric private duty nurses due to very low Medicaid reimbursement. Travel nurses are experienced (2+) years in the area they are placed. There are limited opportunities for LVN travel nurses the majority I've seen are for experienced dialysis, LTC or subacute LPNs. They are not going to orient you to a new specialty as a travel nurse. There are extremely few acute care LPN travel jobs, if any. Common travel specialties are OR RNs, critical care RNs, LDRP RNs, ED RNs, Psych RNs, med-surg RNs.
