As a TX resident, I may take the NCLEX-RN and once I pass, obtain a provisional RN license. I understand that the BON requires me to complete 500 hours under a preceptor. There is not much information about this online and was wondering if anyone has experience with this particular scenario. If you have any knowledge about this process, I would greatly appreciate it.
Hi, I am currently enrolled in GA. GA also has the preceptor requirement based on previous experience and where that experience lies. They have a specific form that has to be filled out and the BON has to approve it. I would suggest either calling or going on your BON website to see what the requirements are for "Non-Traditional" nursing students. I would also start this process as soon as possible so as to not delay in getting required paperwork completed. I hear it can take a while in some places.
Best of Luck and congrats on being this close to graduation!
Hey there! Can you explain how Excelsior University works? I am currently enrolled in another school with a few more courses to take before I can apply to the schools nursing program. I was just looking at other avenues.
Thanks!
Excelsior does take other prerequisite classes. I am not sure about nursing classes. All of the course work is online with virtual simulation later on in the course. Many of the classes have proctored tests. It took me 18 months with all of my prerequisites to complete the course. At the end of the program you will have to pay out of pocket to travel to your clinical destination. The biggest headaches I had were cost of books- $3000, travel- $3000, and getting all of my documents approved in time to make the cut for clinical courses. Good luck!
I doubled up each 8 week semester. It is doable, for sure. I had a new born when I started, a full-time job, and a 9th grader in marching band. Did I cry? yes...Did I want to give up? yes...but I made it! You will make it too. Do not hesitate to ask the instructors for clarification. Some professor like papers and assignments done in specific ways. If there are discrepancies, let them know! They will work with you. Best of luck!!
