LVN New Grad Looking for First Job

Nurses LPN/LVN

Published

Hello fellow LVN/LPNs - I am having a heck of a time finding any agency, hospital, SNF, etc that hires new grads. (I'm graduated, IV Certified, passed the NCLEX, and newly licensed) How long does it take to get my first nursing job? I'm in the Bay Area, California. Anyone know of any place that is hiring or have any suggestions or advice? Thanks!!!

I'm cognizant that you're looking for good news, but I have none at the present time. The San Francisco Bay area is one of the most devastating job markets for new grad nurses who are seeking employment because the region is saturated with too many unemployed nurses who are competing for too few jobs. Some of the graduates from the class of 2009 have not yet found employment. That's how bad it is out there.

If you quickly want a full-time job, I would suggest that you relocate away from the Bay area if you could afford to do so. If you cannot move due to finances or family ties, I would establish a network by volunteering in healthcare facilities so that you'll get noticed in a positive manner. Get to know the nurses at these facilities and keep in touch. One of them might introduce you to a hiring manager, recruiter, or human resources rep.

Also, you may want to turn your resume over to a professional service so that they can polish it up and bring out the best in it. Good luck to you!

It's tough out there for everyone in the Bay Area...I think I'm just tiring seeing a "need" for LVNs (and RNs) but then they're not willing to hire new grads. I know it's gonna be tough to get this first job under my belt and I'm just trying to keep my head up and keep applying everywhere like crazy.

It took me about a month and a half to find a job (in IL). Just keep looking and stay positive! Everything will work out!
