LVN - Med-Surg

Nurses General Nursing

Hello,

I’m an LVN and I just got hired at a hospital. I’m gonna be on the floor in telemetry and med-surg. Does anyone know what the day to day is like for an LVN in a hospital, what kind of duties an LVN would do.

I’m leaving my SNF for a hospital and I know it’s a major adjustment. I’m not sure what to expect.

It varies greatly depending on your state's scope of practice and your hospital's policies. Some do almost every task that RNs do. At my current place, they were only allowed to give PO medication and assist with hygiene. No assessment. No charting.

I live in California.

Specializes in Travel, Home Health, Med-Surg.

I worked at a hospital that had RN/LVN teams. We were assigned a pt list and the LVN did the medications (PO, SQ, IM), started PIV/fluids (some), did care plans, drew labs (timed) when lab not available, called MD prn and charted nursing PN. They did not do admit or discharge paperwork (although they could assist with certain aspects of the admission), AM/daily assessments, hang any IVPB or IVP meds. Although both had assigned tasks it was meant for the 2 to work together as a team. As Sour Lemon states it depends on the state as well as the facility. Even within the same state one facility may have different policies than another.

However, I am not sure this is how your facility will have you work, they didn't say anything about the job description to you?

Congrats on the new job!
