LVN in Dialysis

Published

I will have a clinic shadowing with Davita next week for LVN dialysis.

Am I going to play the role of tech with 4 patients or I will handle number of patients just like an RN? What are tasks I can do that techs cannot do? What would really separate me from RN roles?

And althoug I read A LOT of negative things (horrible things) here about Davita I might still take the offer coz I just have to ( just in case there's an offer).

That actually is highly variable, depending on your state. But I would say Main differences between LPN and RN in the clinic are that RNs do assessments, and pass meds. Unless you have a special certification or it is allowed in your state, you cannot push the IV meds. The charge nurses are ultimately responsible for a lot of education, assessments, and signing off on others work, (supervising).

I'll bet your role is a lot more hands on and exciting! I used to love when they assigned me a pod of patients and i worked as a technician. I love the patient interaction. You will be responsible for your patients, but the charge RN will be able to change things as they see fit, including fluid removal goals, saline boluses, and treatment complications. Depending on the state, some Lpn's can work with central venous catheters, but techs can't, that is one huge advantage when I was in South Carolina. The RNs never had time to start all the patients with catheters.

I believe that you can't piggyback Iv narcotics and give blood transfusions. LPN's can do IV meds, that depends on the job, not the scope of practice
