LVN considering going generic RN

Published

Hi All,

I passed my NCLEX-PN on March 25th. I am currently attending Pasadena City College to refresh my anatomy (5 year recency). I have a few ideas that I need help with. I went to American Career College in Los Angeles. (Worst School Ever!) I'm applying to a few nursing programs next semester and maybe some this semester and well I am debating if I want to go generic and start the program over or do a bridge and go LVN to RN. My reasons, my clinicals weren't all that great and now since I've been out of Nursing school, I feel like I forgot alot of what I was taught. It is a waste of time for me to do the 1st year over? I think the area where I feel I am not that prepared is pharm because our school didn't offer an actual pharm class, just what we learned in clinicals. Should I just brush up on it now before I apply to the LVN to RN or should I take it over? HELP! any advice would be greatly appreciated. :nurse:

I've never heard it called "generic RN" before :)

I went to nursing school with an LVN who was actively working (19+ years) as a LVN, but wanted to start the RN program from scratch because she felt that she could benefit from the experience. She wasn't on a dealine or money crunch so she was able to do it...and she didn't feel that it was a waste of her time to take the extra two semesters to do it.

However, she's not you...or you're not her :) Only you can decide if it would be worth it. Keep in mind that you will have to take and pass the NCLEX-RN, which is not like the NCLEX-PN, so if you are feeling weak on certain subjects it may be worth going "generic."

Then again, I never was a LVN, so I can't really offer you any perspective from the LVN point-of-view. Perhaps some LVNs who went RN will chime in.

I have the same worries as you. I went to ACC anaheim and it's the pharm that I am worried about as well. But I will be applying this fall to LA County LVN-RN bridge to start Summer 2014. I figured in the mean time I will study pharmacology and other subjects I feel a little weak on. But I don't have the time or money to go generic instead of bridge so I am just going for it!

Thank You for your thoughts. I decided to do the Generic RN program instead of the LVN-RN because I am working an an LVN, I figured I have the time and money to do two extra semesters. It could only help me come NCLEX time. I had once spoke to my teacher who taught at ACC and LACN and she said LVN's are always weakest in Pharm. @ Lovemy3boys: I thought about doing the bridge but I always hear that it's difficult to transition into a program because of the way they do their careplans and test styles, etc. But good Luck to you!! I thought ACC anaheim was better than ACC LA omg that school was a nightmare. I'm actually mad at myself for going there and mad at helping their NCLEX rate by passing the 1st time..lol
