Hi everyone, I am an RN just hired for my first camp nursing job this summer (8 week camp). My contract states that I will be paid in a lump sum upon completion of the camp. I've never had a job that paid this way before, and I was just wondering if anyone can give some insight. Is this normal in the camp nursing world?
Thanks in advance!

Hi. Congratulations on the new gig. My contract is paid in weekly installments and a completion bonus. 80% weekly over 9 weeks and then 20% on my last check. Travel expenses are paid at the end of contract, but Liscence and other fees are paid whenver accounting gets to it. I don't know how you could take a lump sum contract and still pay bills! I just don't have the $4000 it would take to pay the mortgage and utilities for the entire camp term.

My camp pays at the end of the summer, although expenses for travel to camp are available earlier. We also can take money out against our check through the summer.

Camps do this to keep you from bailing during the summer. I've heard that some camps forget to pay you if you leave early. I was offered a lump sum contract like this once that said pretty much if I didn't work the entire summer they didn't have to pay me. I told the CD this was unacceptable and he changed it to every two weeks. Be wary of camps with wonky pay practices. It implies a high turnover, which might mean it is not the best place to work. Or they could just be trying to save money by having fewer pay days. Find out before you get there.
