LTC or ALF which is best for First Postion?

Published

This is my first nursing position which would be better w/that being the case? I have an interview coming up w/LTC. I prefer to begin w/LTC to learn my skills, the ALF really wants me though. I guess it will depend on who offers me the permanent shift and better pay. Which do you think is the best position for a new grad?

Specializes in LTC.

I think it would be best to start with the LTC. You will have more opportunity to learn more and to use the skills you learned in school.

Good luck with the interviews.

Im still so undecided but then again I do really want to learn clinical skills. I know that I need to. In working for AL, it will be putting off the inevitable. Right now Im not sure if I have a choice because I still need to interview for LTC but they want me in AL definitely. Maybe I can begin in AL and then do LTC. Does LTC do any orientation on nights does anyone know?

I hope you are going to start with the LTC position. I started there and have found it to be such an avid part of my nursing experience. I learned so much while there that I jumped into wound care nurse, assessment coordinator, then into nurse manager. You become 'physician' so-to-speak for your residents. You end up (most of the time) telling the doctors what you think that resident needs. I loved it and wouldn't have changed my decision for the world. Now jump in with both feel and hang on because it can be a rewarding challenge! Good luck!
