LSU BSN

U.S.A. Louisiana

Published

Hi everybody,

Im new to this site and could really use some advice. Im starting LSU traditional BSN program. Was wondering if anyone has any advice about what to expect and what I should do to prepare. Also if anyone is actually a student at LSU that would help or if they are starting in the Fall as well.

Really, they told her that too? Well that makes me feel better, hopefully it's just a threat and it won't be placed into affect. Did they tell your sister every year that they would close the program? If they do close the program what would the current students do? Would they close the program for newcomers and let current students finish their program?

That is terrifying im so excited to start my BSN program in the fall :( I dont understand how they could close an entire program while theirs incoming students and students on the road to graduate. It just makes no sense!

So, the good news is that I heard from somebody in the media that the nursing program will not be cut because LSU uses their most important program (nursing) as a tactic to get them to change and lower budget cuts. They know that the state does NOT want to lose this program. Hope this is true!

eh.. maybe im pessimistic but its not a terrible idea to cut the program. from a business standpoint there are tons of other nursing schools in the state and losing LSU's would not be such a terrible loss to the state. However for those who have gotten accepted for the Fall and are currently in the program like myself dont be alarmed because they would have to let us finish because other nursing schools would not accept our credits and we would essentially have to "start over" which is not an option to me. any way lets not worry about that and focus on doing our best in school. Congrats to all the new soph 1s and Soph 2s... smh that was the worst 2 semesters of my academic career But im glad to finally be a Junior lol. and there is no way but up from here!

@kaitlynnrs91, I'm sure theres lots of programs in the state but definitely not in Neww Orleans. As a single mother I can't afford to travel to go to school. LSU is the only affordable BSN program in the city. Our Lady of Holy Cross is too expensive and recently lost their accredidation for losing a significant amount of their teachers. Charity is not a BSN program so I don't see how losing LSU's program would be a good idea even from a business standpoint.

Hi Everyone- I'm new to the site and am interested in applying to the CARE program at LSU. A few questions I hope someone can help me out with:

1) what are the exact prerequistites for the program?

2) is there a required entrance exam?

3) do admissions look at cumulative or just prereq GPA?

4) can you apply for both the CARE and traditional programs?

Thanks and any help would be appreciated!

yoko1,

Have you looked at their website? LSUHSC School of Nursing | CARE - Admission Criteria

is the link, a lot of your questions are answered on it. You must have a bachelor's degree already AND have completed the required following courses: English Comp. (6 credits), College Algebra (3 credits), Statistics (3 credits), General Biology (3 credits), General Biology Lab (1 credit), Microbiology (3 credits), a Physical Science like Chemistry or Physics (3 credits), Sociology (3 credits), Psychology (3 credits), Fine Arts (3 credits), and Humanities (9 credits). You must have a minimum of a 3.0 overall. For the non science pre-reqs you have to have a C or above. For the science pre-reqs you must have a B or above. You need two letters of references, you need to write an essay, and there is no entrance test.

They only admit once a year in the fall. Deadline to apply is Jan. 15. You can apply to both programs because they are two different programs, you may be accepted to one and not the other. I looked in to the CARE program and seriously considered applying I am a single mother and can not commit to the schedule. You have to have an open schedule because some classes are on weekends and nights. I've heard from people that you will be in class from 7am to 8pm. There are no breaks since everything is in a condensed amount of time. The idea of getting my BSN the same amount of time it would take me to receive my ASN at Charity was tempting but I'm afraid it may jeopardize my GPA with a more condensed program. I think the traditional program would give me more time to study and keep up my GPA. But if I were not a single mother this is definitely the route I would have gone. Good luck and I hope that helps!

KristenNola,

Thank you for the reply. I did visit the website- I guess I just needed confirmation of what I was actually reading! Good to hear that we can apply to both programs...I haven't come across a university that allows that yet.

I have a B.A., so I really would like to get another bachelor's degree in nursing....I've considered Charity, but as I'm sure you know, they only offer an associates which to me means more school in the future.

Thanks again for the speedy info and good luck to you!

Oh, and one more thing...if you are say, a psych major and they require 3 credit hours of psych, will they take your best grade in Psychology, or the most basic, like intro psych. I'm trying to figure out if I should repeat my freshman year of college! ;)

I'm pretty sure they will take just the Intro to Psych class. I repeated that class as well because my freshman year of college 6 years ago I did not care about my academics as much and received a C. I repeated the class this past Spring so I could replace it with an A. But you know you can always send an unofficial copy of your school transcript to [email protected] and ask him if he could review to tell which classes would be accepted and what would not. I did that and he replied back really fast and I ended up finding out that I still need a Sociology class, which I thought had fulfilled!

Amazing- Thanks KristenNola!

I'm applying for the Spring 2013 as well. I'm super nervous. Applications are due in August. I have a 3.2 for my pre-reqs and around a 3.1 overall. I'm freaking over the HESI. I don't think I'm going to do too good. :-(

What sucks is that I haven't heard of anyone who HASN'T made it into the school....I wish someone could tell me if they've ever heard of someone being rejected from LSU nursing on the first try....
