Hi everybody,
Im new to this site and could really use some advice. Im starting LSU traditional BSN program. Was wondering if anyone has any advice about what to expect and what I should do to prepare. Also if anyone is actually a student at LSU that would help or if they are starting in the Fall as well.
If you go to: "Current Students" then "FTP Site" log in like this: lsumc-master\yourusername and your email password. Most of the classes have an updated syllabus available. Just make sure you know what the class number is before entering the FTP site because that's the only way they're listed.
Do you have access to Moodle yet? Same user name and password as your email. Lots of class info goes there. Not sure if yours will be up yet, but it very well could be. I know I had at least a bit of info about a week before starting. Information is never timely in this here town
Physiology - Health Science 2410
Intro - Nursing 2371
Anatomy - Health Science 2412
Ab Psych - PSYC 3044
Ab Psych hasn't been updated, but she's been using the same book for years, just the updated version - Abnormal Psychology by Ronald J. Comer, 7th edition. You should be able to get away with using the 6th edition since that saves you $$$. IMHO, if you're a good note taker and listener, you might not need the book. The class ahead of you will be clamoring to sell this book once the semester starts also.
N2371 is updated for Spring and the list of required books is lengthy, as always. If you can find a friend to share Scope and Standards and Guide to the Code of Ethics, go for it. You could get away with sharing an APA book too, but that one is very much needed. You can't get away with an old version, either. They are incredibly strict with APA standards on papers and those standards change all the time - it's cost me an entire letter grade once when I got lazy on a paper and didn't look for an APA update. The big, expensive one (Fundamentals) is also a must. Half of the listed required materials are free online documents from the state board, so no worries there.
Physiology hasn't changed in years either. Same book.
Don't buy the anatomy textbook. Waste of money. I never opened it. You'll get all you need in lecture. I'd suggest just buying the atlas.
Don't go buy a "clicker" unless the instructor specifically says they're actually going to use them. Yes, it's in the syllabus but wait and see what they have to say about it on the first day.
I buy my books online. The bookstore is always at least $10 higher than Amazon. If you use your student email at Amazon, you get free "Prime" which means free 2-day shipping! Saved me a ton. And if you need it overnight, it's still only $4! I would, however, suggest that once you verify your school email with them, get off of their mailing list ASAP. LSU doesn't like non-school related stuff going to your email.
FTP is file transfer protocol. It's just an old fashioned way to transfer files on the Internet, not an LSU thing. Guess I'm showing my age by knowing that.
It's in the Current Students section under "Information Systems." It says "Course Files (FTP Site)." It's not a site that people really even use much, I just happened upon it when I was digging around before I started a year and a half ago. I still dig around on it to get ideas on what future courses may look like syllabus-wise. I just wanted to point it out so you'd at least have some hint of an idea.
When it comes to online class info, Moodle and/or direct email from an instructor are your most reliable sources. Unfortunately, for those of us who like to plan way in advance, information's not very timely around here.
N2371 looks fine as the syllabus says it's also for Spring '11. I'd place bets with my life that the others are good also since they've been identical for at least the last 4 semesters (with the exception of newer editions, of course). You'll be just fine not having your books for the first week of class or so. You should have stuff on your Moodle within the next week - at least a few days before classes start, I hope. That's where class syllabi will be posted. No worries. Only exception is abnormal psych - she doesn't use LSU email or Moodle at all.
